FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Pacific's
Morgan McClincy ended a 102 minute scoreless deadlock by firing a shot off the bar that crossed the goal line to give the host Boxers a 1-0 double overtime victory over Linfield on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Hanson Stadium.
The win was the second in conference play this season for Pacific (2-3-1) and they improved to 2-7-1 overall. Linfield, who was in third place in the Northwest Conference, dropped to 6-2-1 on 2015 and to 3-2-1 in the NWC.
McClincy ended a long afternoon of soccer by rocketing the shot off the top of the post, where it bounded straight down and past the Linfield keeper.
It was the fifth overtime match of the year for Pacific. They are now 2-2-1 in extra time contests.
"Our staff is extremely proud of this group and their efforts today," said Pacific head coach
Morgan Joseph. "We have made great headway in training the last couple of weeks and were finally determined to make it count on the pitch today.
"We have been battle tested in multiple overtime situations this year, and today we showed we had both the grit and composure to finish a game."
Kililani Kunitomo earned the shutout for the hosts. She had three saves in the match. Pacific had 10 shots on the afternoon, four of them on goal. Linfield had 14 shots, four of them on goal.
"It is hard to single out any individual performances because there were so many, but I have to recognize our entire backline for being the driving force behind the shutout, and of course Morgan for recognizing the opportunity to make a difference and taking her chance," Joseph added.
The Boxers will play a pair of weekend matches next, traveling to Willamette on Saturday (noon) and to Pacific Lutheran on Sunday (noon).
