ATHERTON, Calif. — Host Menlo mounted a furious second half comeback and then outlasted Pacific in the final minutes of the third overtime to win a wild 101-97 non-conference men's basketball game at the Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
The improbable rally allowed the Oaks to improve to 5-2 on the season while the Boxers fell to 2-1.
Pacific led by 13 points at halftime and still had a 11-point margin (56-45) late in the contest. But Menlo scratched back and pulled within four points (63-59) on Tyler Evans' three-pointer with 40 seconds left. It was Evans' first trey after eight misses behind the arch, but he would begin to make up for it over the rest of regulation and in overtime.
With less than a minute to play, Evans would nail three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt to pull within one point (65-64). On two possessions, with
Michael Garcia making three of four free throw attempts, Pacific had a 68-66 lead when Mikey Eggleston drove the length of the court and scored at the buzzer to tie the game, and was fouled.
After a Pacific time out, Eggleston headed back out to the floor to win the game with a free throw--but missed, sending the game into its first overtime.
Nate Olowo hit two free throws in the first extra period with 10 seconds left to tie it at 77-77 and Menlo missed at the buzzer to send the game to its second session.
In the overtime number two, the teams traded buckets until two free throws by
D.J. Christian gave Pacific an 87-84 lead with 14 seconds left. Evans then fired and missed another trey attempt but was fouled, and subsequently made all three's to send the game into a third extra period.
Again, the clubs traded baskets until Pacific went cold on its final three possessions and Menlo didn't, with back to back baskets by Adam Griffin to account for the 101-97 final.
Michael Joseph led five Boxers in double figures with 21 points.
Skyler Burgess and Olowo had double-doubles with 14/12 and 12/11 points and rebounds respectively.
DeVon Pouncey added 17 points and D.J. Harrison had 14.
Evans hit 10 of 10 free throws on his way to game high 28 points. Menlo hit 10 of 30 treys and 19 of 22 free throw attempts.
The Boxers will have a short time to heal and rest, traveling to Santa Cruz on Saturday to take on UC Santa Cruz at 5 pm.
