REDLANDS, Calif. — Host Redlands broke open a tight game with a second half run to pull away from visiting Pacific University on Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's basketball action in southern California, 73-58.
The Bulldogs improved to 2-1 on the year with the victory at Currier Gym, while the Boxers dropped to 3-2.
Pacific twice had seven-point leads in the second half--once after a
Skyler Burgess tip-in (40-33) and again after a three-pointer by
Rafe King (45-38) with 14:32 left to play. Redlands led 31-28 at the half.
But the 'Dogs rallied back with a pair of three-pointers and later took the lead for good on a lay-up by Blake O'Brien (50-48) with 10:48 to play. That helped jump start a 11-2 Bulldog run that gave the hosts a 66-54 lead with under five minutes left on the clock, securing the outcome.
Burgess led the Boxers with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while King and
DeVon Pouncey chipped in 10 points each. But Pacific hit only 30 percent of its shots from the field, including only 25 percent in the second half. They were also just 6 of 22 from behind the arch. The Boxers did outrebound their hosts, 46-36.
Redlands, of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), had four players in double figures, led by Wyatt Pannabecker's 13 points. Pannabecker hit three of four treys, including two big bombers during the Bulldogs' second half comeback.
Pacific will wrap up its southern California swing with a Sunday 2 p.m. encounter at La Verne.
