FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Warner Pacific led from almost start to finish but still had to hold off a late Pacific rush to win a women's non-conference basketball game at the Stoller Center on Sunday night, 67-60.
The win moved the Knights (NAIA) to 4-1 on the season, while the Boxers dropped to 2-2.
Warner Pacific went on a 10-2 run in the second quarter to take a 24-16 lead that they never relinquished. They had a 31-21 margin at the half and pushed it to 38-25 midway through the third quarter.
The Knights led 52-41 heading into the final stanza, but the Boxers begin a comeback that made things interesting down the stretch.
Jillian Ross hit a three-pointer with 2:11 left to pull the home team to within five points (56-51) and
Sarah Curl drilled a three with 28 seconds left to make it a four point game (64-60), but the Knights hit free throws to keep the Boxers at bay.
In fact, WPU hit 23 of 28 free throws in the game to hold off any Boxer threat. Kendra Preuinger was eight-of-eight from the charity stripe and finished with 17 points, many of her charity tosses coming in the fourth quarter.
Sarah Curl led the Boxers once again with 22 points and six rebounds Kyla Sira chipped in 18 points and
Karli McHone added 11.
Warner Pacific, whose only loss this year was to Whitman, had a 41-31 edge on the boards, but only hit two three-pointers compared to Pacific's eight (8-33).
The Boxers now head into Northwest Conference play, hosting Willamette (Friday) and George Fox (Saturday) at the Stoller Center.
