Boxers get win on senior night

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Pacific received double figure kill numbers from three players, using a balanced attack to defeat Puget Sound 3-1 in the Northwest Conference volleyball finale for both teams.

The Boxers claimed the season series over the Loggers and finished the year with a pair of wins. The Boxers topped UPS 3-0 earlier this season in Tacoma, and swept the weekend by beating George Fox on Friday night.

Pacific finished the year 7-9 in conference play and 10-14 overall with the 18-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-23 victory at the Stoller Center. Puget Sound winds up the year at 9-15 overall and 6-10 in the NWC.

Freshman Ciara Smith had 14 kills to lead all players, while teammates Marie Rewick and senior Hannah Herbert were also in double figures with 12 and 11 kills respectively. The Boxers also had four players with double figure dig numbers--Rewick with 19, Lia Zablan with 18, Karissa Komo with 16 and Anna VanderWeyst with 15. Emily Farnham had 44 assists.

The Loggers won the first set, taking a 16-15 lead and pushing it to 20-15 on the way to the 25-18 win.

But the Boxers took the second set, rolling on Komo's serve to break a 7-7 tie and move to a 11-7 lead. They would score 12 of the next 14 points on the board during that run and win going away, 25-15. Pacific led for much of the third set before ending the game on a Rewick kill (25-18).

The fourth set was a back and forth affair that Pacific only trailed for the first three points of the game--and never led by more than four points. On the third match point of the set, a service error finally ended the night and gave Pacific the win (25-23).

Hannah Stinson led the Loggers with 13 kills and Rachel Garrison paced her team in digs with 24.

"It was nice to finish strong," said Boxer head coach Kip Yoshimura. " We were a much better team the second half of the season and it was nice to wrap up the year with a pair of wins."
