Boxers upset Lutes in season finale

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Sataj Johnson scored her first career goal in her final college game and Tia Kinilau added the game winner with less than ten minutes to play to lead Pacific to a 2-1 upset victory over No. 23 Pacific Lutheran on Sunday afternoon at Hanson Stadium.

The win over the second-place Lutes gives the Boxers a positive ending to the 2015 season. They finished 4-10-2 in Northwest Conference play and 4-14-2 overall. PLU is now 11-3-2 in NWC and 15-3-2 on the year, and awaiting news on a post-season tournament play.

Johnson, who 15 minutes earlier was one of eight seniors honored before the game, collected a rebound off the PLU keeper and deposited the ball into an empty net at the 12 minute mark. It was her first goal at Pacific, after transferring to the Boxer campus two seasons ago.

But the Lutes answered 14 seconds later at 12:03 on a shot by Kelsey Hathaway and that 1-1 score was what went into the book at halftime.

That's the way the match stayed until the 81st minute when Kinilau collected a rebound shot and pushed it into the corner of the net. Pacific's defense did the rest and the Boxers celebrated the biggest upset in the NWC this season.

"It was a great way to end the season," said Boxer head coach Morgan Joseph. "We have lost a number of close matches this year and it was rewarding to finish the season on the positive end of one of those games."

In addition to Johnson, other seniors honored before the match were Lyndsey Watanabe, Nicholle Leeming, Morgan McClincy, McKenna Davidson, Marisa Huffman, Krisa Duff and Kendall Stratton.
