FOREST GROVE, Ore. — No. 2 nationally ranked George Fox (USA Today Coaches Poll) was threatened but not dismantled during a 75-64 women's basketball victory over Pacific on Saturday night at the Stoller Center.
The Bruins, 32-1 last year and NCAA Division III runner-up, improved to 6-0 and 2-0 in the Northwest Conference. Pacific dropped to 2-4 on the season and to 0-2 in conference play.
The Boxers gave the defending Northwest Conference champions a scare, coming back from a 17-point deficit in the second quarter to tie the game in the third stanza. During that turnaround, the Boxers nailed seven of seven three-point attempts in the second quarter alone.
They continued their torrid comeback in the third quarter, tying the contest at 54-54 on a basket by
Kyla Siri with 2:05 left in the period. But back-to-back baskets by Justine Benner put the Bruins back up 58-54 at the end of the period.
GFU would eventually go on a 11-0 run in the fourth quarter and Pacific would get no closer than seven points after that. Pacific would only score 10 points in the final stanza, after scoring 27 in the second period. The Boxers would also play much of the fourth quarter with three top players in foul trouble, including leading scorer
Sarah Curl who would eventually foul out.
Karli McHone would lead the Boxers with 21 points, while Curl added 16 and
Nikki Gilbert had 13. Curl had a double-double with 11 rebounds and she also had three assists and two steals. The Boxers finished 8 of 15 from three-point range and hit 12 of 14 free throw attempts. Pacific out-rebounded the much taller Bruins, 40-33.
Benner led the Bruins with 22 points while Kaitlin Jamieson added 15 points and nine rebounds. Kaycee Creech contributed 12.
Pacific will take a break from conference play until the new year, hosting Evergreen State on Tuesday at the Stoller Center. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
