Strong Shooting Night For Pirates Too Much For Boxers

Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. – No. 21 ranked Whitworth could do little wrong in the shooting department Saturday night, putting together a consistent performance to knock out Pacific 89-50 in Northwest Conference men's basketball action at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The Pirates (20-3, 13-1 NWC) shot well in every aspect of the game, shooting 52.4 percent from the field (33-63), 40.7 percent from three-point range (11-27) and 92.3 percent from the free throw line (12-13) to win their third consecutive win and come one win away from their fifth consecutive conference crown.  Pacific (11-12, 6-8 NWC) was limited to 25 percent from the field (12-48), but managed a respectable 80.8 percent (21-26) from the free throw line.

Danny Brakebush (So., Portland, Ore.) came off the bench to lead Pacific with nine points.  Mitch Wettig (Sr., Bend, Ore.) added eight points while Skyler Burgess (Jr., Riverton, Utah) and Coby Proctor (Sr., Sublimity, Ore.) each had six.

George Valle and Christian Jurlina each had 14 points for Whitworth as four Pirates' players finished in double figures.  Adam Wilks added 12 points and Kenny Love scored 11.

Whitworth never trailed in the contest, but it would take time before it turned into a rout.  After trailing by as much as six early, Brakebush brought the Boxers back within two, 13-11, with his lay-up with 10:53 to go.  Whitworth responded with an 13-0 run, culminating on Derek Issak's three-pointer with 6:06 left in the half for a 26-14 Pirates' lead.

The Whitworth lead remained 12 points when Whitworth closed the half on a 9-0 run, allowing the Pirates a 20-point advantage before Michael Garcia's (Fr., Forest Grove, Ore.) lay-in with four seconds left brought the Boxers within 41-23 at the half.

The Pirates put the game away early in the second half, opening the stanza on a 16-4 run to build a 59-27 lead on Valle's lay-in at the 14:41 mark.  Whitworth built up to their largest lead of 42 points with 5:46 to go.

Pacific will close out the 2014-15 home schedule on Tuesday night, hosting George Fox at 8 p.m.  Live audio and video webcasts of the game will be available at GoBoxers.com.
