Boxers Open Conference Play With Puget Sound Sweep

FOREST GROVE – The Pacific softball team's offense exploded all over Sherman/Larkins Field on Saturday as the Boxers scored 26 runs over two games in a doubleheader sweep over Puget Sound.

Marissa Reichard (Jr., Forest Grove, Ore.) threw three perfect innings, while driving in three runs at the plate in Pacific's 19-0 five-inning victory in Saturday's opener, while the second half of the double dip saw Pacific top the Loggers 7-5 on the back of a three-RBI showing from Ashley Mitchell (Jr., Redmond, Wash.).

The Boxers wrap-up an eight-game homestand on Sunday with a Northwest Conference doubleheader against Pacific Lutheran set to begin at noon.

Game One: Pacific 19, Puget Sound 0 (5 innings)
Six different Pacific players drove in two or more runs in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader as Pacific cruised to a 19-0 victory over the visiting Loggers.

After a scoreless first inning, Pacific opened the floodgates in the bottom of the second when Kylee Yamamoto (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii) led off the frame with a single up the middle, before taking second base on a passed ball. Yamamoto found herself on third when she advanced on a Mitchell ground out.

A first-pitch, one-out triple to right center by Margaret Bachmeier (So, Newberg, Ore.) plated Yamamoto for the games opening run. After Puget Sound recorded the second out of the inning, Reichard doubled to left center to score Bachmeier. A single up the middle from Jordan Schmerbauch (So., Mililani, Hawaii) put runners on the corner for Rachel Roberts (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.), who singled up the middle to score Reichard and put Pacific ahead 3-0.

The Boxers offense continued to roll when Snydar turned a 1-1 pitch into a RBI single. An error allowed Roberts and Snydar to score as Quirena Natividad (Jr., Waipahu, Hawaii) scampered to first and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. A triple to center by Yamamoto pushed Natividad across for the Boxers' seventh and final run of the frame.

A third perfect inning in the pitching circle for Reichard set the Boxers up for another big inning as Bachmeier led off the bottom of the third with a two-strike single up the middle. A Puget Sound error allowed Bachmeier to reach second and Kaitlyn Shikada (Sr., Honolulu, Hawaii) to reach first with no outs.

Reichard hammered her second double of the game to drive in Bachmeier and put Boxers on second and third for Schmerbauch, who drove in Shikada on a single up the middle. The bases were soon loaded for Pacific after a single by Roberts, before an out at the plate kept the bases occupied as Snydar reached first on a fielders choice.

A pinch-hit walk by Nalani Antonio (Jr., Kapolei, Hawaii) plated Schmerbauch, before Caitlyn Ramiscal (Fr., Kapolei, Hawaii) also drew a bases loaded walk and saw Roberts cross the plate for Pacific's fourth run of the inning and 11th run of the afternoon. Mitchell delivered a sacrifice fly to right to score Snydar, which was followed by an error to re-load the bases and allow Haley Kodama (Fr., Manana, Hawaii) to walk and see Antonio score the sixth Pacific run of the frame.

The bottom of the third continued for the Boxers when Reichard earned her third RBI of the game with a single up the middle. Schmerbauch added to her RBI total in the Boxers' next at-bat when she singled through the left side to score Chan.

Roberts followed Reichard and Schmerbauch with a single through the right side to plate Kodama, while Reichard scored on a single by Snydar. Schmerbauch and Roberts scored Pacific's final two runs of the game on singles by Antonio and Ramiscal.

The Loggers earned their lone hit of the game in the top of the fourth, before the two sides held one another out of the scoring column for the final three innings of Pacific's five-inning 19-0 game one victory.

Reichard was perfect through three innings, with two strikeouts, while Schick tossed two innings in relief with one strikeout. Reichard finished the day 3-3 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI.

Roberts was perfect at the plate with a 3-3 day with three runs and two RBI, while Snydar, Antonio, Ramiscal and Schmerbauch also finished the opening game with two runs batted in each.

Game Two: Pacific 7, Puget Sound 5
Mitchell drove in three runs in Pacific's 7-5 victory in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.

A one-out single by Kristi Nagamine and a Erica Gott walk set the table for Puget Sound in the top of the first as Paige Schaffer homered to center field to give the Loggers an early 3-0 lead over Pacific.

The bottom of the frame saw Pacific claw back into the game when Jessica Hotaling (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.) singled to the pitcher and soon stole second. A walk and wild pitch placed runners on second and third for Pacific, until a single up the middle by Yamamoto scored Hotaling, pushed Natividad to third and saw Yamamoto reach second on the play.

A single up the middle from Mitchell plated the second run of the frame for the Boxers. The final run of the inning came for Pacific with one out on a single down the left field line by Kylee Oshiro (Sr. Aiea, Hawaii).

Neither team managed to score over the following three innings, until a two-out single by Nagamine was followed up by a triple from Gott and a single by Shaw to put Puget Sound up 5-3 after four and a half innings.

As was the case in the first inning, Pacific matched Puget Sound in the bottom of the inning when Hotaling and Natividad delivered back-to-back singles. A dropped fly ball allowed Hotaling and Natividad to advance, but Yamamoto was called out on the infield fly rule – despite Yamamoto being called out by the umpiring crew, Mitchell kept Pacific in the scoring column when she singled through the left side to score a pair of Pacific runs.

The Boxers finished their scoring efforts in the bottom of the sixth inning when Shikada reached on an error to lead off the inning. A walk and a flyout placed runners on the corners, until Kiera Melton (Sr., Pleasanton, Calif.) moved from first to second on a wild pitch.

Hotaling grounded out for the second out of the inning, but a pair of two-out runs came soon as Natividad singled through the left side to score Melton and Shikada.

Pacific wrapped up the game in the top of the seventh on a one-two-three effort in the circle by Alyssa Burns (Fr., El Dorado Hills, Calif.

Burns earned her second win of the season in relief, while Mitchell and Natividad both finished game two with multiple runs batted in.
