Boxers Come Through In Close Matches To Declaw Tigers

LOS ANGELES – Face with a number of close matches, Pacific performed strong to break a three-match losing streak Wednesday, beating Occidental 8-1 in women's tennis action at the McKinnon Family Tennis Center.
 
The Boxers saw two doubles matches finish with two-point margins while three singles matches went to three sets.  The Boxers won both doubles duals and two of the three marathon singles matches to improve to 4-6 on the season.
 
Kaitlyn Lomartire (So., Portland, Ore.) and Jelena Vidovic (Fr., Vancouver, Wash.) set the pace at No. 1 doubles, outlasting Keilani Bonis-Ericks and Lauren Hutkin in one of the 8-6 matches.  Carlee Rhodaback (Jr., Albany, Ore.) and Mai Kobayashi (Fr., Waikoloa, Hawaii) prevailed in the other, avoiding the tiebreaker with an 8-6 win over Sara Charney and Isabella Korfmann at No. 2.  Sidney Smith (Fr., Olympia, Wash.) and Kanani Kea (Fr., Mililani, Hawaii) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 victory over Lucy Malloch and Samantha Farrell at the No. 3 flight.
 
In singles, Vidovic to an impressive 10-1 on the season as she took a 6-1, 6-4 win from Farrell at No. 1.  Lomartire engaged Bonis-Ericks in the first of the three three-set affairs at No. 2, bouncing back from a second-set tiebreaker loss to score a 6-3, 6-7 (7-4), 6-1 win over Bonis-Ericks to improve to 9-2 on the season.  Smith came back from a set down to take the second three-set match, beating Amber Gadsden 5-7, 7-5, 6-4.
 
Charney collected the only win for Occidental (1-8) on the afternoon, beating Kobayashi 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.  Rhodaback put Pacific back on the winning path with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Lauren Hutkin at No. 5, 6-3, 6-2, while Kea collected an 8-3 Proset victory from Korfmann at No. 6.
 
Pacific will complete their three-match southern California road trip on Thursday, taking on NAIA member Hope International at noon.
