Corban Makes Early Runs Stand Up To Beat Boxers

Box Score

FOREST GROVE – Corban's offense struck early and often while their pitching limited Pacific's opportunities Wednesday as the Warriors picked up an 8-0 non-conference baseball victory from the Boxers at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.

The Warriors (10-8) cobbled out all but one of their 14 hits over the first five innings and succeeded on capitalizing on two Boxers' errors.  Corban starter Caleb Henry did not allow Pacific's first hit of the game until the fifth inning as five pitchers succeeded in limiting the Boxers (2-8) to just three hits on the night.

Nic Coffman started a two-out rally to open scoring in the first, knocking a double to right and scoring on Martin's single up the left field line.  Tyler Dordan led off the Corban second with a single and later scored on Ben Straka's ground out.  Martin added the Warriors' run in the third, double up the left field line with one out and scoring two batters later on a single by Scott Dreier.

Corban broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning in which they scattered five hits.  Chase Swainston started it off with a one out single. Straka added a single up the left side and Swainston scored on Stockton Taylor's single to right.  Coffman tallied two more when his double plated Straka and Taylor.  Vince Gonzalez closed the run when his single scored Coffman.  The Warriors added on in the fifth when Straka reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a double by Taylor.

Pacific had their first base-runner in the first inning when Donnie Bradley (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) was hit by a pitch, but was wiped out on a fielder's choice.  Ben Duerr (Jr., Lebanon, Ore.) picked up the Boxers' first hit with a leadoff single in the fifth, but was wiped out on a double play.  Fernando Careaga (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.) picked up a hit in the seventh, singling over the first baseman to lead off the seventh and Duerr legged out a single to open the ninth.

Henry picked up his second win of the season for Corban, allowing the one hit and one walk while striking out two in five innings.  Nate Montgomery (Jr., Sherwood, Ore.) took his first loss of the year for Pacific, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over the first two innings.  Martin went 3 for 5 with a double, a run and a RBI to lead Corban, while Duerr's two hits led the Boxers.

Pacific returns to Northwest Conference play on Saturday as they host Puget Sound for a doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled for noon.  A live video webcast of the game will be available at GoBoxers.com.
