Boxers Send Seniors Out With 16-8 Home Victory

FOREST GROVE – On Senior Day, a pair of sophomores led the Boxers in scoring as Pacific topped the Pirates of Southwestern 16-8 at Hanson Stadium thanks to a five-goal showing from April Lanz and a hat trick outing by Meg Chapman.

Pacific jumped on the Pirates less than two minutes into the game when Kara Smouse (Jr., Portland, Ore.) fed Lanz (So., Oregon City, Ore.) on her first goal of the morning. Only 23 seconds later Lanz fed Chapman (So., Woodinville, Wash.) on Chapman's first tally of the day.

The Pirates battled through the next few minutes of play and tied the game on goals from Allison Schmitt and Kate Davis. The strong Pacific attack regrouped and with 20:41 left in the first period, Lanz repaid Smouse's assist on her first goal, by assisting on Smouse's lone tally of the day.

Smouse's goal was the first in a four-goal run for Pacific as Lanz netted two-straight, including one off an assist from Abby Talboy (Jr., Boise, Idaho) before Chapman scored a free position goal to give Pacific a 6-2 lead.

Davis netted her second goal of the game for Southwestern before Pacific tallied five-straight goals before the end of the opening half. Pacific's run started as Amy Mayhugh (Sr., Tigard, Ore.) assisted on a Lanz goal to give the Boxers a 7-3 lead.

Paisley Hiefield (So., Portland, Ore.) set-up Nicki Leeming's (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) only goal of the day, before Pacific's all-time leading scorer, Mayhugh, scored her first of the morning. Mayhugh's goal, the eventual game winner, came on an assist from Talboy.

With 1:03 left in the period, Mayhugh fed Hiefield for her first goal of the day, while Lanz wrapped up the first half with a free position goal that put Pacific ahead 11-3 at the break.

Talboy joined the scoring action in the second period when Lanz assisted on a goal with 28:43 left in regulation. The Pirates answered with three goals, but Mayhugh broke up the Southwestern run with a goal to give Pacific a 13-6 lead.

Hiefield tallied her second goal of the game with 23:45 on the clock, while Schmitt netted the seventh goal of the morning for the Pirates with 23:13 to go.

Chapman and Krista Cave (Fr., Martinez, Calif.) closed Pacific's scoring before Schmitt scored her third of the day with a little over 10 minutes remaining. Schmitt's tally was the final goal of the game as Pacific maintained possession over much of the final ten minutes of play.

Lanz led Pacific offensively with five goals and three assists, while Mayhugh notched nine draw controls on the morning. Mayhugh and Chapman both finished the day with four ground ball pickups and Mayhugh notched four caused turnovers in the game.

Adrienne Salzwedel (So., Beaverton, Ore.) recorded four saves in the victory.

Mayhugh and her sister Julie Mayhugh (Sr., Tigard, Ore.) were honored before the game as part of the Boxers' Senior Day festivities. The Mayhugh's both will finish their collegiate careers in the Pacific top-10 for games played.
