NEWBERG, Ore. – Each of the last two years, Budweiser Hawkins (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) saw his chance at the Northwest Conference men's long jump title lost on the final jump of the competition.

Not this year.  This time Hawkins prevailed on his last jump over the competition to win the long elusive title, leading Pacific's efforts on the first day of the Northwest Conference Track and Field Championships, held at Stoffer Family Stadium.

Hawkins finished with a best effort of 23 feet, 3.25 inches to win his first NWC championship.  In the process, Hawkins also leaped up the Pacific all-time list is the event from fifth to third with the best performance in the event by a Pacific athlete since 1976.

The performance led a first day of the conference meet that saw two other Pacific athletes score in the finals of their respective events and six notch spots in Saturday's running event finals.  Hawkins himself qualified for the finals in the men's 100 meters, finishing third in the first heat with a time of 11.30 seconds.  He is also entered in the men's high jump and triple jump.

Dianna Church (Fr., Bothell, Wash.) was the lone point scorer on the first day for the Pacific women, placing sixth in the shot put with a season best of 36 feet, 8.25 inches.

Kris Sapp (So., Sacramento, Calif.) secured spots in Saturday's finals in both sprints.  He won his heat in the 100 meters with a time of 11.13 seconds and is the No. 4 qualifier in the 200 meters after running 22.48 seconds.  Trey Oshiro-Atabay (Sr., Aiea, Hawaii) qualified in the 400 meters with a time of 51.30 seconds and Daniel Wagner (Sr., Kailua, Hawaii) won his heat of the 110-meter hurdles, qualifying for the final with a time of 15.34 seconds.
