FOREST GROVE – The Pacific softball team opened its weekend series against Lewis & Clark with a doubleheader sweep on Friday of the Pioneers, as Pacific took game one 8-1 before winning game two 4-3.
Â
Kylee Yamamoto (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii) drove in six runs in Pacific's game one victory, while
Alyssa Burns (Fr., El Dorado Hills, Calif.) earned a victory in the pitching circle during game two of the twin bill.
Â
The Boxers and Pioneers meet again on Saturday with first pitch set for noon at Sherman/Larkins Stadium.
Â
Game One: Pacific 8, Lewis & Clark 1Yamamoto drove in six runs on two bases loaded doubles in Pacific's game one victory over the Pioneers.
Â
After a scoreless first inning,
Kiera Melton (Sr., Pleasanton, Calif.) singled to right with one out before advancing to second on a
Marissa Reichard (Jr., Forest Grove, Ore.) walk in the second inning.
Â
Rachel Roberts (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.) looked to sacrifice bunt with runners on first and second, but a throwing error allowed both Melton and Reichard to score as Roberts hustled to second base. After the final two outs of the inning were recorded, Pacific held a 2-0 lead, which it carried into the bottom of the fourth.
Â
The bottom of the fourth opened with a one-out bunt single by Roberts. An infield pinch-hit single by
Trisha Snydar (Fr., Lynden, Wash.) was followed
Ashley Mitchell (Jr., Redmond, Wash.) being hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Â
After a lineout was recorded for the second out of the frame, Yamamoto doubled to left center to give Pacific a 5-0 lead over the visiting Pioneers.
Â
The Pioneers jumped onto the scoreboard in the top of the sixth on a bases loaded hit by pitch before the final out of the inning was recorded.
Â
Pacific responded to Lewis & Clark's run in the sixth with a bunt single from Roberts to lead off the bottom of the inning. Snydar singled through the right side and advanced to second as Roberts scampered to third.
Â
The bases became loaded for Yamamoto after
Kylee Oshiro (Sr., Aiea, Hawaii) was hit by a pitch. With one out and the bases loaded, Yamamoto delivered another three-run double to left center giving Pacific an 8-1 lead after six full.
Â
Allie Sims (So., Puyallup, Wash.) entered the pitching circle for Pacific in the top of the seventh and sat the Pioneers down in-order to finish off Pacific's game one victory.
Â
Reichard earned her 11th victory of the season in the circle as she struck out three in Pacific's victory.
Â
Game Two: Pacific 4, Lewis & Clark 3Mitchell recorded two base hits, while Burns struck out a pair in relief as the Boxers came from behind to top the Pioneers 4-3 in game two.
Â
Both the Pioneers and Boxers battled through three scoreless innings, despite both sides putting runners on base in each frame until the fourth inning when Lewis & Clark scored the first run of the game.
Â
Madison Hollenbeck led the fourth inning off with a walk, before advancing to second a groundout. Lewis & Clark soon plated Hollenbeck as Ateisha Norton doubled to left field. After Oshirio picked off Norton at third, a single and an error allowed Yearman to score from second.
Â
After reaching second on the error that scored Yearman, Kalin Rooney would score on a single to left center by Ashley Bolick. The Boxers escaped the inning without any more damage when Burns got Stephanie Garcia to lineout for the final out of the inning.
Â
Pacific answered quickly in the bottom half of the inning when Yamamoto led off with a single through the left side. A two-out walk saw runners on first and second before
Jordan Schmerbauch (So., Mililani, Hawaii) hit into a fielders choice. Lewis & Clark collected the grounder from Schmerbauch and looked to retire Yamamoto at third, but the throw was muffed and the bases became loaded for Pacific.
Â
A dropped fly ball in left field plated Yamamoto,
Nalani Antonio (Jr., Kapolei, Hawaii) and Schmerbauch, while also allowing Roberts to reach base safely before the final out was recorded two batters later.
Â
A scoreless fifth inning was followed by a one-two-three top of the sixth inning before Schmerbauch led the bottom of the sixth off with a walk.
Â
An infield single from Roberts advanced Schmerbauch to second, where she would score on a one-out single by Mitchell.
Â
Burns retired the Pioneers in the bottom of the seventh to earn her third win of the season in the circle.
