Bethke Breaks Men's Discus Record At Jenn Boyman Invite

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Jesse Bethke (Sr., Cave Junction, Ore.) was one of three individual event winners for Pacific and reset his own record in the men's discus to lead the Boxers' track and field teams in the Linfield Jenn Boyman Memorial Invitational, held at Maxwell Field.

Bethke won the discus with a mark of 150 feet, 11 inches. That surpassed the record of 150 feet, 5 inches, which he set at last year's Pacific Luau Meet. Bethke won the event by eight feet and remained with the second best mark in the event in the Northwest Conference this season. Bethke added a pair of eighth place finishes in the hammer, throwing 46.33m, and the shot put with a season best 13.01m.

Budweiser Hawkins (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) was Pacific's other men's individual event winner, claiming the high jump with a mark of 1.90m. He also managed a second place finish in the men's long jump with a leap of 6.77m. Britta LaVoie (Jr., Spokane, Wash.) found herself in a five-way tie for first in the women's pole vault, clearing 3.47m.

Three other Pacific athletes improved their marks on Pacific's all-time lists. Kris Sapp (So., Sacramento, Calif.) placed third in the men's 100 meters with a time of 11.01 seconds, moving to No. 7 on the all-time list. He went on to place fourth in the 200 meters in a season best 22.48 seconds. Shannon Hammond (Fr., Forest Grove, Ore.) tied teammate Kelsey Lee (Jr., Monroe, Wash.) for No. 8 on the all-time list for the women's 100-meter hurdles with her season best time of 17.14 seconds. Steve Allen (So., Svensen, Ore.) improved his No. 8 time on the list for the men's 5,000 meters, placing fourth in a time of 15:46.52.

Pacific's first women's 1,600-meter relay of the season, comprised of Dawne Yamamoto (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii), Hayley Palmer (Sr., Sisters, Ore.), Marlee Chovich (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.) and Mikaela Bernards (Fr., Hillsboro, Ore.) placed fifth in a time of 4:16.35, ranking them No. 8 all-time in the event.

Sean Higinbotham (So., Phoenix, Ariz.) had Pacific's only new NWC Championships qualifying mark of the meet as he clocked a season best of 11.36 seconds in the 100 meters. Higinbotham had already qualified for conference in the 400 meters.

Other top Pacific men's running event winners included Daniel Wagner (Sr., Kailua, Hawaii), who placed third in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.67 seconds and sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in a season best 58.09 seconds. The men's 400-meter relay team of Connor Pappas (Jr., Heppner, Ore.), Sapp, Higinbotham and Hawkins placed third in 43.11 seconds. In the men's field events, Jeremy Parkinson (Jr., Hubbard, Ore.) placed seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 13.13.

Other top women's placers included Emily Sproul (Fr., Salem, Ore.), who placed sixth in the javelin with a mark of 38.30m, and Dianna Church (Fr., Bothell, Wash.), who placed 10th in the shot put with a mark of 10.66m.

Pacific now prepares for the first of two home meets. The Pacific Luau Invitational will begin at 9 a.m., at Hanson Stadium.
