FOREST GROVE –Emily Sproul (Fr., Salem, Ore.) is proof that sometimes it only takes one big effort to earn a chance to compete on the national stage.

On the shoulders of a series of impressive marks from the Pacific Twilight earlier this month, Sproul has earned an invitation to compete in the women's javelin at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships.  The meet takes place Thursday through Saturday in Canton, N.Y., with the javelin being contested on Saturday.

With the invitation into the 22-athlete field, Sproul becomes the fourth Pacific athlete selected to compete in the women's javelin at NCAA Championships, joining Ann Kaltwasser, DeeDee Arnall and Brooke Barker.

Sproul showed steady improvement for the Boxers throughout the season.  She finished sixth at the Northwest Conference Championships, putting forth a then-personal best effort of 126 feet, 6 inches.  The topper came at the Pacific Twilight on May 1, where a series of impressive attempts ended with a 10-foot personal best of 136 feet, 10 inches, which lifted Sproul to No. 3 on Pacific's all-time list.

Two other Pacific athletes just missed qualifying for the field of 20 in the men's events and 22 in the women's events.  Fellow women's javelin thrower Mackenzie Huddleston (Jr., Milwaukie, Ore.) finished the year with Division III's 26th best mark in the women's javelin with a throw of 135 feet, 9 inches at the L&C Spring Break Open on Mar. 21. Budweiser Hawkins (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) finished the season with 22nd best mark in the nation in the triple jump, clearing 47 feet, 3.75 inches at the NWC Championships.
