Men’s Soccer Squad Falls Short In Opener

FOREST GROVE, Ore.—The Pacific men's soccer team ran into a hungry Warner Pacific squad, falling 4-1 in its 2015 season opener on Tuesday night at Hanson Stadium.

The Knights, who dropped their first two matches of the season, took out their frustrations on the Boxers who were taking the field for the first time this fall. Warner Pacific (NAIA, Cascade Conference) used two goals by Cesar Esquivel and the senior forward also added an assist in the non-conference victory.

"We have to fine tune some things on the defensive side," said Boxers head coach Eric Mild. "Some of the goals we gave up are preventable. Our young defenders are learning what it is like to play college soccer. Some of that might come with the fact that it was our first match, but either way we have to improve and get better."

Esquivel got his team on the board early at the 16th minute, shooting a header past Pacific goalie Leyton Thommasen, off a free kick from Knight keeper Joe White. 13 minutes later (29 min.) Esquivel fed teammate Alejandro Catalan on a give and go to give the visitors a 2-0 lead, a margin that they would take into the halftime locker room.

The teams played evenly early in the second half until Esquivel scored his second goal of the night in the 62nd minute to make it 3-0. But the Boxers would answer just three minutes later when freshman Jesus Velasquez-Greer scored his first college goal and fellow rookie Peter Vizzoni notched his first career assist (65 minutes).

Edgar Contreras capped the banner night for the Knights with a goal in the final minute.

Warner Pacific moved to 1-2 on the season and the Boxers are 0-1.  Pacific will next travel to Spokane, Wash. for a pair of neutral site matches, facing Minnesota-Morris on Friday (4 p.m.) and Northwest on Saturday (1:30).
