Lutes rally for volleyball win over Boxers

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Pacific captured the first set but Pacific Lutheran rallied to win three straight sets and the match on Saturday night at the Stoller Center 18-25, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-21 in conference volleyball action.

Pacific Lutheran improved to 8-5 overall and to 2-2 in the Northwest Conference. Pacific dropped to 2-9 on the year and to 0-4 in league action.

The match was tightly contest all night and took nearly two hours to complete. After the Boxers fell behind 4-0, they came back to take a 9-8 lead and never trailed again in the first set (25-18).

The Boxers came sprinting out of the gate in set two, blitzing out to a 9-3 lead thanks to seven straight service points from Morgan Mendicino. But as would be the theme for the night, the Lutes battled back to tie the slate at 11-11 and then took a lead that they never relinquished in the set--although they wouldn't lead by more than four points before settling for the 25-22 second set.

The third set belonged to PLU from almost start to finish (25-19), but set number four had numerous ties and lead changes. Neither team had led by more than two points with Pacific leading 20-19, but the visitors scored six of the final eight points to claim the set (25-21) and match.

Marie Rewick led a balanced Pacific attack with 12 kills, followed by Morgan Mendicino with 11 and Ciara Smith with 10. Rewick also had three aces and Smith had four blocks. Emily Farnham had 38 assists and 14 digs. Lia Zablan had 19 digs to lead the defense with Karissa Koma right behind her with 18.

Lucy Capron led the Lutes with 13 kills and 21 digs. Michaela Edgers was huge in the middle for the visitors with eight blocks.
