Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Boxers slip by Pios in 3 OT

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — It took over eight years and three overtimes, but the streak is finally over.

Pacific's DeVon Pouncey and J.J. Spitler provided the needed spark off the bench to help lead the Boxer men's basketball team to a 80-77 triple overtime men's basketball victory over Lewis & Clark on Friday night at the Stoller Center in front of 1,100 delirious fans.

The win moved Pacific to 9-7 on the season and to 3-4 in the Northwest Conference. The Pioneers fell to 7-8 overall and to 3-4 in league action.

For the Boxers, the win snapped two losing streaks.

The victory brought to a close a four-game skid in conference play. And it marked the first time that Pacific has topped Lewis & Clark in eight seasons. The Pioneers had won the last 17 contests between the two schools, dating back to the 2006-07 campaign.

Pouncey and Spitler had 15 and 13 points respectively off the bench, and both had big buckets at either the end of regulation or in one of the overtime periods. Or both.

Spitler's first shot of the night found nothing but net from beyond the arc with six seconds left to tie the game at 53-53 and send it into the first extra time. The Bend High School native, playing in just his seventh game, also hit Pacific's first shot in overtime number one and nailed a pair of free throws in the first minute of play. In all, he scored 11 points in the extra periods.

Pouncey hit a free throw with six seconds left in the first overtime to tie things up (61-61), and then tied the game again in the second overtime with a shot in the paint with 42 tics left (67-67). That was the score as the teams went to the third extra five minutes.

Rafe King's trey gave Pacific a 71-68 lead with 3:30 to go, and then Pouncey muscled in shots in the paint with 1:52 left and with 36 seconds to go. That last basket gave the Boxers a 75-71 lead, and Spitler then hit three of four free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Neither team led by more than six points all night, and that was Pacific's 8-2 lead in the first moments of what turned out to be a long night. The score was tied 13 times and there were 14 lead changes.

Skyler Burgess had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Boxers in both categories. K.C. Harrison was close to a double-double with nine points and nine boards.

Four players were in double figures for the Pioneers. Cannen Roberson had 15 points and 11 rebounds, Jason Luhnow had 14 and Carl Appleton and Markel Leonard had 10 each. Roberson had 11 of his points in the first half.

Neither team converted at the free throw line. Pacific hit just 21 of 41 charity attempts (.512) and the Pioneers hit 27 of 48 (.563).

That was Pacific's second three-overtime game of the season. They lost to Menlo in three extras, 101-97 on the road in November.

After a game that lasted nearly three hours, it will be a short turnaround for the Boxers. They host Linfield on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Stoller Center.
