Third quarter blitz pushes Boxers past Pios

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Host Pacific outscored Lewis & Clark 17-5 in the third quarter to pace a comeback victory over the Pioneers on Friday night in women's Northwest Conference basketball action at the Stoller Center.

The win, Pacific's third in a row, evened the Boxers overall record at 8-8 and they improved to 3-4 in conference play. The Pioneers dropped to 2-14 on the season and to 1-6 in the NWC.

Sarah Curl led Pacific with 18 and eight rebounds, while Karli McHone added 17. Kyla Siri was also in double figures with 12 points and she pulled down seven boards.

Early on, it looked to be the Pioneers night. They led at the end of the first quarter (16-9) as the Boxers had seven turnovers and shot only 33 percent from the field in the first ten minutes. L&C pushed their lead to 18-9 early in the second quarter on a basket by Natalie Kelly and would lead the rest of the half--although Pacific would pull to within three points on a McHone three-pointer with a minute left before intermission. That was Pacific's first trey of the opening 20 minutes.

L&C led at the break, 26-23.

But the Pioneers went stone cold in the third quarter. From the end of the second quarter until three minutes remained in the third, Pacific outscored the Pios, 15-0. Pacific took their first lead since early in the game on the first two baskets of the second half by Siri (27-26) and they would never trail again, hitting 7-of-11 shots in the quarter.

Pacific would outscored Lewis & Clark 17-5 in the third quarter and led 40-31 heading into the final stanza. The Pioneers would rally to as close to four points (51-47), but the Boxers held on for the win.

The Boxers, who came into the game averaging over seven three-pointers in the game, had only one tonight. But they got to the free throw line, converting 25 of 34 attempts.

Kaitlin Mathewson and Alyx Crager led the Pioneers with 12 points each.

The Boxers will return to the court tomorrow night (Saturday), hosting Linfield at the Stoller Center. Start time is 4 p.m.
