Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bruins outshoot Boxers in marathon

NEWBERG, Ore. — George Fox's Rico Thomas scored 34 points, including 14 crucial counters in overtime to lead the host Bruins to a 108-101 men's basketball victory over Pacific on Friday night at the Wheeler Sports Center.

George Fox evened the season two-game series with the win and improved to 6-12 on the year and to 3-6 in the Northwest Conference. Pacific fell to 9-9 overall and to 3-6 in conference play.

Thomas hit 7-of-10 three-pointers and hit a number of huge baskets late in the game.

There were 19 lead changes in this back and forth contest. The Boxers took one of those leads (78-77) with 36 seconds left in regulation on an inside shot by Michael Joseph. But GFU's JJ Lacey countered with a go-ahead basket moments later (79-78). Pacific's Skyler Burgess then drove the lane and was fouled with four seconds left. He made one of two free throw attempts (79-79) to send the game into overtime number one.

Pacific appeared to take control early in that extra period as K.C. Harrison hit a three-pointer and two free throws to give the Boxers a 87-82 lead with 2:17 left. After DeVon Pouncey's two charity tosses with 1:28 remaining, Pacific led 89-82.

But Thomas brought his team back almost single-handedly. A spinning shot in the key followed by a NBA length three-pointer and another lay-up, all in a span of 26 seconds, tied the game at 91-91, sending the game into overtime number two.

Both teams traded baskets on successive possessions to the second overtime (93-93), but GFU used two steals and five points by Thomas to go on a 7-0 run in a blink of an eye to give the Bruins a lead they wouldn't give up. Leading 100-93, they hit free throws down the stretch to account for the 108-101 final.

On the night, the Bruins drained 14-of-23 trey attempts, while Pacific hit only 6-of-31. The Boxers held a 54-42 rebound advantage.

Joseph led the Boxers with 22 points, missing only two shots all night (8-10). He also had nine rebounds and six assists. Harrison added 21 points, Burgess 15 (7-of-9 shooting) and 12 rebounds and Nate Olowo had a double-double as well with 14 points and 11 boards. Senior guard Bobby Ahern had 12 points in his first game since December 8 (because of injury).

The Boxers will continue the second half of Northwest Conference play with a Saturday night clash in Salem against Willamette. Tip time is 6 p.m.
