SALEM, Ore. — Pacific outscored Willamette 17-6 in the third quarter to come from behind and claim a 59-57 women's basketball victory over the Bearcats on Saturday night at Cone Field House.
With the win, the Boxers avenged a Northwest Conference season-opening loss to Willamette back in December. They also improved to 9-10 on the season and are now 4-6 in the NWC. The Bearcats dropped to 12-7 overall and they are also 4-6 in league action.
Karli McHone led all scorers with 19 points, hitting 5-of-10 shots from three-point range.
Kyla Siri added 14 points and six rebounds and
Sarah Curl had 13 in the scorebook with six boards. Willamette had four players in double figure scoring: Marisa Hamilton (12), Kyle Towry (11), Whitney Anderson (11) and Madi Andresen (10).
The Boxers led by as many as seven points in the first quarter, thanks in part to a pair of treys by Siri. But the Bearcats went on a 9-0 run to retake the lead in the second quarter, with all the points during that blitz scored by Anderson or Andresen. The home team would outscore Pacific 21-11 in the second quarter and would lead at the break, 32-26.
But Pacific came out of the locker room on fire, scoring the first ten points of the third quarter in just over two minutes and 30 seconds of action. McHone led the charge with four total treys in the third period, helping the Boxers to reclaim a lead that they would never relinquish again.
The Boxers led 43-38 heading into the final stanza, although Willamette would twice cut that margin to just two points--including on the final basket of the game by Towry with the outcome already secure.
Pacific hit 8-of-19 three-point attempts, five of those by McHone.
The Boxers will take their longest NWC road trip of the season next weekend, traveling to eastern Washington to take on Whitman (Feb. 5) and Whitworth (Feb. 6).
