FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Despite a rugged defense that had No. 2 nationally ranked Whitworth on the ropes, Pacific's offense went stone cold early and late as the Pirates pulled away for a 62-50 men's basketball victory on Saturday night at the Stoller Center.
Undefeated Whitworth moved to 13-0 on the season and to 4-0 in Northwest Conference play. Pacific saw its five-game winning streak come to a halt and they are now 8-4 on the season and 2-1 the NWC.
The Boxers were within two points after a
Rafe King basket (46-44) with 11 minutes left, but Pacific would only score four points over the next ten and a half minutes. Whitworth would outscore the Boxers 14-4 during that stretch.
Pacific also came out of the gates slow to begin the game on the offensive end, hitting only two of its first 11 shots and four of their first 19. Still, their stiffling, physical defense kept Whitworth off the scoreboard more than they are used to.
After trailing 14-6 with 13 minutes left in the first half, Pacific clawed back and would take what would be their only lead of the game on a coast-to-coast basket by King (26-24) with 1:45 to go before halftime. King came off the bench and scored three straight buckets for the Boxers, but a 9-2 run by the Pirates gave them a 33-28 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Boxers closed to within three points on a trey by
K.C. Harrison just over a minute in, and
J.T. Campbell's shot behind the arch also left Pacific just three points short with 13:20 left. But after King's lay-up made it 46-44 Pacific went icy the rest of the way.
Michael Joseph had 12 points to lead the Boxers, but he was the only Pacific player in double figures.
Skyler Burgess had 11 rebounds to go with seven points and three blocked shots. Pacific had eight blocks in the game and held Whitworth to its lowest point total of the season. But the Boxers shot just 33 percent from the field, were 4-of-20 from three-point range and converted just two of seven free throw attempts.
Whitworth had four players in double figures, led by Matt Staudacher's 13 points. Kyle Roach added 12, Kenny Love had 11 and Christian Jurlina had 10. George Valle led the Pirates with eight rebounds, while Love had seven assists and three steals.
Pacific will have a short turnaround before taking on No. 25 nationally ranked Whitman on Saturday night at the Stoller Center. Start time is 6 p.m.
