A quick 13-0 lead in the first three minutes propelled visiting No. 8 Linfield to a 48-10 win over host Pacific on Saturday at Hanson Stadium.
The Boxers (1-4, 0-2 NWC), who will host six home games in Forest Grove, found themselves behind early for the second-straight week. In the four losses by the Boxers, they are being outscored by a 51-14 in the first quarter.
The Wildcats (3-1, 2-0 NWC) scored all of its points in quick fashion with 41 of the 48 points coming on offensive drives that took less than 2 minutes. The other seven points came on an 84-yard interception return by Mikey Arians just before halftime.
Linfield quarterback Sam Riddle was picked off three times and sacked four times, but he also managed to complete 14 of 28 passes for 286 yards and four touchdowns in the win. The four touchdown passes went to four-different receivers for the Wildcats. In the win, Riddle and the Wildcats outgained the Boxers by a 506-253 margin.
After the opening kickoff, Linfield forced a fumble on the first play and quickly capitalized when Spencer Payne scored from nine yards out. The Wildcats' defense forced its first of 12 punts and added its second touchdown of the quarter when Riddle found Johnny Carroll for an eight-yard touchdown pass.
Facing a 13-point deficit, later in the quarter, the Boxers forced its first turnover of the day when they forced a fumble on a punt.
Pacific capitalized on the Wildcats' miscue when senior quarterback
Campbell Summerfield (Sandy, Ore.) connected with freshman
Kobe Williams (Las Vegas, Nev.) for a 28-yard touchdown reception to cut the deficit to 13-7.
In the second quarter, the Boxers put three more points on the board when
Alex Beekman (Beaverton, Ore.) made a 25-yard field goal making it 13-10.
To set up the drive, Boxers' defensive back
Andy Harris (pictured; photo by Tanner Boyle) (Midvale, Utah) picked up his first of two interceptions on the day. Harris is the first Pacific player since Bryan Mills against Puget Sound on October 12, 2013 to record two interceptions in a game.
Later in the quarter, Harris picked off his second pass of the game with 1:19 left in the opening half. The Boxers and Summerfield moved down the field to put Pacific in a position to possibly tie the game or take the lead.
However, on 4
th and 1, the Wildcats' Mikey Arians rose to the occasion and stepped in front of a Summerfield pass and returned it 86 yards to put Linfield ahead 20-10 with 10 seconds left in the opening half.
Linfield added to its lead with 21 points in the third quarter and seven more in the fourth quarter en route to the 48-10 win.
Despite the loss, the Pacific defense recorded four sacks, picked off three passes, forced and recovered a pair of fumbles. Offensively, Williams has a touchdown reception in four of the five games for Pacific. The 12 punts by
Ryan Carhart are the most by a Pacific player since the return of the program in 2010.
Next, Pacific will host Lewis & Clark on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hanson Stadium for its annual homecoming tilt.
