Boxers End Season with 39-35 Win Over Puget Sound

After trailing for the first time in the game, the Pacific University football team went on a 21 play, 83-yard drive that ended in a 3-yard touchdown pass from senior Campbell Summerfield (Sandy, Oregon) to freshman Kobe Williams (Las Vegas, Nevada) that propelled the Boxers to a 39-35 win on Senior Day in Forest Grove.

The Boxers (4-6, 3-4 NWC) were behind 35-32 with 8:05 to play after a 47-yard interception return by the Loggers before Summerfield led Pacific down the field in a drive that will be memorable for the 23 Pacific seniors. Twice on the drive, the Boxers converted on 4th down including an eight-yard scramble by the Sandy, Oregon native to extend the drive.

With 3rd and goal, Summerfield found Williams - his favorite target for 2016 – in the back corner of the end zone for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown. For the day, Summerfield completed 27 of 44 passes with 341 yards and four touchdowns – all to Williams.

For Summerfield, the 4 TD passes tied a career high and it was his third 300-plus yard passing game of his senior campaign. Williams posted his sixth 100-yard receiving game of the season with 157 yards and 11 receptions. Plus, it was Williams' third game with double-figure receptions en route to setting a new school single-season reception mark of 79. The four receiving touchdowns tie the mark held by Eric Nioclai, who also had four touchdown receptions against Willamette in 1986.

The Boxers' Alex Beekman tied a career-high with a 42-yard field goal to end the third quarter for his fourth field goal of the day. With four field goals on the day by Beekman, it is the first time since Jon Lee made four against the Loggers on Sept. 4, 2010.

Pacific senior linebacker Jack Perez (Petaluma, Calif.) had six tackles, including a stop for minus yardage to go along with a breakup and a hurry. He ends the season with 123 stops, including 15 for a minus 36 yards. Another strong senior standout Jeff Bajema (Burlington, Wash.) ends his final season with 53 stops, including 14 for loss and 9.5 sacks to his credit.

Trailing 32-14, the Loggers scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to take the 35-32 lead. Seven of which came after an interception, seven more came when Jacob Wuesthoff stepped in front of a pass and raced in for a 35-32 lead with 8:11 to play.

Loggers' quarterback Hans Fortune completed 25 of 47 passes for 333 yards with four touchdowns on the day. Dustin Harrison was the top receiver for Puget Sound with nine catches for 62 yards and a touchdown. Plus, Steve Branham had five catches for 56 yards and two touchdowns, plus teammate Austin Wagner had nine rushes for 105 yards – 85 of which came on just one rush to support the Puget Sound ground game.

Pacific scored the first 20 points of the game with Summerfield and Williams connecting on a pair of touchdown passes and Beekman making a 34 and 22-yard field goal, respectively for a 20-0 lead. The Loggers got on the board late in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 20-7. Pacific came back with a 7 play, 44-yard drive that ended with Beekman making a 37-yard field goal – his third of the game – just before halftime for a 23-7 lead at the intermission.

The Boxers' extended the lead to 29-7 on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Summerfield to Williams on the first drive of the second half for the home team. Despite the 22-point deficit, Puget Sound cut the Boxers to lead to 29-14 when Branham caught his first of two touchdown passes with 8:31 to go in the third quarter.

A 25-yard kickoff return by freshman Riggs Kurashige (Holualoa, Hawaii) set up the Boxers with good field position; however, the Boxers were only able to come away with the fourth field goal on the day by Beekman for a 32-14 lead with 5:58 to go in the third quarter.

A touchdown to start the fourth quarter by Puget Sound trimmed the Pacific lead to 32-20. Next, a Loggers' interception set up a touchdown and an interception by Wuesthoff put the visitors ahead 35-32 with 8:05 to play.

The Boxers' rallied behind their senior quarterback, who found fellow senior Kamana Pimental (Kaneohe, Hawaii) on a 3rd and 4 play to start the drive for an early first down. Back to-back runs by Brandon Boyd (Gilroy, Calif.) and Pimental gave Pacific its second first down on the drive.

Then, on 4th and 1, junior fullback Mack Mackesy (Mission Viejo, Calif.) ran the ball for just the second time in the season for a first down to continue the drive. Another uncharacteristic play of the season, on 3rd and 5, Summerfield scrambled for the fourth first down of the drive. Again, Summerfield found an opening in the Loggers' defense on fourth down to run eight yards on 4th and 4 to continue the memorable drive.

A 2nd and 6 pass play to Williams from Summerfield set up first and goal for the Boxers. Following back-to-back rushes by freshman Raekwon Turner (Sacramento, Calif.), Summerfield found Williams for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown and Beekman added the point-after attempt.

After a pair of completions by Fortune, the Loggers set up for a hail-mary pass that was knocked by a host of Pacific defenders, including seniors Andy Harris (Midvale, Utah) and Jack Perez (Petaluma, Calif.), who were playing in their final game.

With the win, the graduating class of 2016 will leave Pacific as one of the winningest four-year stretches in program history.

The season might be over for the Boxers but the accolades will begin to pour in for a Pacific squad that had many strong individual and team performances in 2016.
