The Pacific University volleyball team saw its season end in heart-breaking fashion with a 26-24, 21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-9 lost to Pacific Lutheran on Saturday at the Stoller Center in Forest Grove.
Seniors -
Tiare Kaopua (Nanakuli, Hawaii),
Jamie Steach (Pasco, Washington) and
Lia Zablan (Ewa Beach, Hawaii) – who were recognized in pre-match ceremonies led the Boxers, who end the season at 14-12 overall and 8 -8 in the Northwest Conference.
Kaopua ended her career with a career-high 27 kills, just one shy of the single-season match record. Plus, Kaopua finished the 2016 season with 358 kills, also one shy of the single-season record of 359. Plus, she nearly had a double double with nine digs in the loss.
Steach had 52 assists in her final match to lead Pacific to go along with seven digs, three kills and two service aces. She finished the season with 899 assists, which are the fifth most in a single season.
Zablan recorded 23 digs in her final match to go along with four assists in the defeat. She ended the season with 445 digs which are the fourth most in a season in Pacific history and 1,269 career digs which ranks third all-time.
Also for Pacific, sophomore
Anna VanderWeyst (Lacey, Wash.) had a match-high 24 digs in the loss and freshman
Bailey Servoss (Mount Vernon, Wash.) had nine kills and a .474 hitting percentage.
On the other side of the net, three Lutes (13-11, 11-5 NWC) had double-digit kills, including Chloe Epker, who had 16 to lead Pacific Lutheran, who hit .226 in the win. The frontline for PLU was strong with 12.5 team blocks as Mackenzie Harris had a hand on nine block assists to go along with nine kills. Kiana Calles had a double double with 23 assists and 10 digs in the five-set match.
The match ends the season for Pacific, who tied the 2007 squad with 14 wins on the season.
