For the second-straight game, the Pacific University men's basketball team hit double-digit 3 pointers en route to a 79-71 over host Whittier on Sunday afternoon.
The Boxers (6-2) made 12 3-pointers in a win that saw seven-different players make a three pointer in the win. Among the seven were freshman
Davis Holly (Bend, Ore.) and sophomore
J.J. Spitler (Bend, Ore.), who each accounted for three.
The Poets (1-4) were led by Chris Kapano, who had 18 points to lead four Whittier players in double figures. He was joined in double figures by Eric Davis and Conner Longmire, who each had 13 and Nick Potthoff added 11.
"It was a very solid road win for us and a great game for us to learn from," said Pacific head coach
Tim Cleary. "We did a lot of outstanding things, but at the same time we made mistakes that we cannot afford to make, especially on the road."
For Pacific, junior
J.B. Ewell (Portland, Ore.) had a team-high 16 points to lead five Boxers in double figures. He was joined in double digits by
Michael Joseph (Anchorage, Alaska) and
Nate Olowo (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), who had 15 and 13 points, respectively. Olowo added a game-high 16 rebounds for his second double double of the season. "I thought our front line was outstanding," said Cleary. "
Nate Olowo was a force all night and
J.B. Ewell played with great energy.
Michael Joseph and
Davis Holly were both very solid; plus
J.J. Spitler and
D.J. Christian (East Atlanta, Ga.) gave us very good minutes off the bench." Also in double figures were Holly and Spitler, who each had 11 points.
The Boxers, who were making their second trip to The Golden State on the season, started the game with a 13-4 run that included a 3-pointer by
K.C. Harrison (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Holly. Pacific remained in front for most of the opening half until a 19-3 run by the Poets put the home team ahead 33-27 with 5:46 left to go in the first 20 minutes. The veteran Pacific squad answered the run with a 15-2 run to end the half for a 42-35 lead at the intermission.
In the first half, Pacific made 45.5% (15-for-33) of its shots, including a 53.3% (8-for-15) effort from the 3-point line. Ewell scored 10 of his 16 to lead Pacific and Holly was a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
Twice, early in the second half, Whittier cut the Pacific lead to two. With the Boxers holding a 48-44 lead with 14:58 to play, Pacific went on a 18-2 run over the next five minutes to put the Boxers up by 20, 66-46.
Over the next seven minutes, the Poets failed to concede and eventually cut the deficit to three, 70-67, with 2:28 to play. Again, the Boxers had an answer with a Spitler 3-pointer and sealed the victory as they made 6 of 10 free throws.
Next, Pacific will have a rematch with Redlands in Redlands, Calif. on Monday, Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. Earlier this season, the Boxers defeated the Bulldogs on Nov. 26, 61-59 as part of the Scotts Valley Hilton Classic in Santa Cruz, California.
