Four Boxers hit double digits in 67-51 win over Lutes

FOREST GROVE — Four of Pacific's starters scored in double figures, while a fifth picked up double-digit rebounds in a 67-51 victory inside the Stoller Center over a visiting Pacific Lutheran.

Lauren Lykins (Hillsboro, Ore.) and Karli McHone (Glenns Ferry, Idaho) led the Boxers with 14 points, while Merrily Jones (Milwaukie, Ore.) snagged 11 rebounds.

The Boxers jumped out to an early 10-1 lead over the visitors, when Nikki Gilbert (East Wenatchee, Wash.) struck from beyond the 3-point arc at the 7:05 mark. Gilbert's make was the last basket for over three minutes for either team, with the Lutes breaking the drought with 3:52 left in the first quarter as Lacey Nicholson finished a layup to put the score at 10-3 in Pacific's favor. The Lutes' make led the visitors to an 11-1 run over the final four minutes and gave Pacific Lutheran a 12-11 lead entering the final minute.

McHone struck for three with 11 seconds left, but a two-point buzzer beater by the Lutes sent the two sides to the break knotted at 14-14.

The tie entering the second period was the only one of the game as Pacific scored the first six points of the period, before Nicholson broke up the Boxers' streak with a layup at 5:58. The Lutes tallied four-straight to pull within two at 20-18, but Lykins scored off a steal by Sarah Curl (Portland, Ore.) before McHone drained a 3-pointer on the following possession to push the Boxer lead to seven.

After a PLU make at 1:56, the Boxers closed out the second period with four points to take Pacific to the locker room at half with a nine-point 29-20 lead.

The Boxers and Lutes came out of the half exchanging makes, but PLU held a 17-9 advantage through the opening eight minutes of the second half to cut Pacific's lead to 38-37. Lykins stopped the bleeding with back-to-back 3-point makes as the third quarter ended with Pacific up 44-37.

After a little over three minutes of back-and-forth basketball, Pacific took control of the game and extended the lead to 20 points at the 2:20 mark with a pair of made free throws by Gilbert to put the scoreline at 64-44 in the Boxers' favor. As the final three minutes of play expired, the Boxers held on to a 16-point advantage and earned the 67-51 home victory.

Joining Lykins and McHone in double figures, was Curl with 13 points and Gilbert with 10 of her own. Gilbert dished out six assists, while Lykins and Curl both finished the day with three steals.

The Boxers out-rebounded the Lutes 40-36, while the Lutes lost the turnover battle with 18 giveaways against the Boxers' eight.

Next for the Boxers is a step out of conference play as Pacific heads to the Treasure State of Montana to visit Great Falls, Montana State-Northern and Carroll. The Boxers open the trip with December 16th meeting with the Lady Argos of Great Falls, the Boxers and Lady Argos are set to tip-off at 4:30 p.m. (5:30 p.m. MST).
