REDDING, Calif. —
Sarah Curl and
Jillian Ross both scored in double digits on Friday evening as the Boxers fell 66-60 to the Simpson Red Hawks at the James M. Grant Center.
Simpson (7-10), NAIA Division II, jumped out to an early 9-0 lead before Pacific (3-7) got on the board with a jumper by Curl (Portland, Ore.) at 6:59. The Boxers continued to chase the hosts as the first quarter continued, finishing the period with a Curl 3-pointer to pull within three of Simpson.
The Red Hawks opened the second quarter up 22-19, but
Karli McHone (Glenns Ferry, Idaho) tallied the first make of the period with a 3-pointer at 7:27 to tie the game at 22-22. After Simpson regained the lead, Curl tied it for a second time with 3:03 remaining in the half. The tie was short lived as Simpson scored on the next possession and finished the half on a 6-0 run, taking a 34-28 lead into the half.
After Simpson's lead reached seven points to open the second half, the Boxers scored eight-straight points and took a 40-39 lead with 2:46 on the clock. Alex Cooper broke up the Boxers' run and regained the lead for Simpson. McHone's 3-pointer at 1:32 earned Pacific a second lead, but Fallon Greenhaw hit a 3-pointer of her own and gave the Red Hawks a 44-43 lead entering the final period.
Pacific came out strong to start the fourth period, outscoring Simpson 11-5 in the first five minutes. Pacific's five-point advantage was cut to one at 3:13. The Red Hawks outscored Pacific 11-4 over the final three minutes and wrapped up a 66-60 home victory over the Boxers.
Curl led all scorers with 28 points, while snagging nine rebounds. Ross (St. Helens, Ore.) scored 12 points on four 3-pointers.
Nikki Gilbert (East Wenatchee, Wash.) dished out four assists on the evening.
The Boxers and Red Hawks meet again on Saturday at 2 p.m. inside the James M. Grant Center.
