Boxers open season with Regal sweep

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Quirena Natividad hit two home runs and Rachel Roberts had five hits on the day as the Pacific Boxers opened their 2016 softball season with a pair of victories over California Lutheran on an 84 degree day at Hutton Field, 5-2 and 12-4.

Pacific is 2-0 on the season while the Regals lost their first two games of 2016 to drop to 4-2.

The Boxers jumped out to an early lead in game one and then hung on for victory. In the second game, they scored in every inning using hits from ten different players to cruise to the win.

In the opener, Natividad provided most of the offense and Marissa Reichard was strong early in the pitchers circle to give the Regals their first loss of the season. The senior third baseman lined a three-run home run off the scoreboard in the first inning and dropped an RBI bunt down the third base line in the third stanza to help the Boxers to a 5-0 lead.

In addition to the four RBI, Natividad also scored twice and had two stolen bases. Roberts was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a stolen base.

Meanwhile, senior hurler Reichard threw six shutout innings and fanned five before finding trouble in the seventh. In their final shot, the hosts used three hits and a wild pitch to chase two runs across the plate. The Regals had runners on first and third with one out before Reichard closed the door with a ground out and a strikeout to end the game.

Reichard finished with seven innings pitched, seven hits, two earned runs, no walks and six strikeouts.

In the second game, Pacific scored three runs in the first inning, three in the sixth and at least one run in every inning in between to romp to the win. Roberts, a senior second baseman, went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three stolen bases to highlight the offensive efforts, although she had plenty of help.

Kaitlynn Donaca had two hits and three RBI, including a two-run double in the second inning. Emily Peters had two hits and scored twice and Natividad added another round-tripper, a solo shot in the fourth.

Three different pitchers toed the rubber for the Boxers in the second game. Allie Sims pitched the first three innings and allowed no runs and three hits. Alyssa Burns took the middle slot and Cassie Apple closed things out. The three didn't give up an extra base hit in the game.

The Boxers will continue southern California action on Friday, taking on Pomona-Pitzer at 12:30 and Whittier at 2:30. The Whittier contest will also be played in Claremont at Pomona-Pitzer.
