Boxers edged in hoop finale, 74-70

PORTLAND, Ore. — Host Lewis & Clark used Jason Luhnow's 25 points and key baskets from his teammates in the final moments to defeat Pacific 74-70 in the men's basketball finale for both teams on Saturday night at the Pamplin Sports Center.

Pacific finishes the season one game under .500 for the second year in a row at 12-13. They wraped up Northwest Conference play at 6-10. The Pioneers end the year at 10-14 overall and are also 6-10 in the NWC.

Luhlow missed only four shots all night (9-of-13). He had 15 of his points in the first half as the Pioneers took a 43-34 lead into the locker room at the break.

The Pioneers still led 51-40 with 15:36 to go in the game before the Boxers began a furious comeback. 11 consecutive points later, Pacific had tied the game on a pair of K.C. Harrison free throws at 51-51 with just over 12 minutes left. From there, two teams that went three overtimes in January during a 80-77 Pacific victory, traded baskets for the next ten minutes.

The Boxers would take a five point lead (63-58) after back-to-back baskets by freshman J.J. Spitler, but the Pioneers would go on a 10-2 run and take the lead on Luhnow trey with 3:23 left. Pacific would twice pull to within one point again, once on two Michael Joseph free throws and again on a Joseph lay-in with 1:18 left.

But L&C answered on a banker by Jonathan Boddie with 56 seconds left (72-69) and Cory Coombe nailed two free throws with six seconds remaining to account for the final 74-70 final.

Harrison led the Boxers with 18 points, Joseph had 14 and Spitler came off the bench to add 12.

There were eight lead changes in the game.

The Boxers lose five seniors off this squad: Skyler Burgess, Bobby Ahern, DeVon Pouncey, J.T. Campbell and Daniel Gunther.
