Boxers win wild one to stay unblemished

HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. — Pacific scored via an illegal pitch and a wild pitch in the top of the eighth inning to pull out a 6-5 win over the University of British Columbia on Saturday morning at the Northwest Cup Tournament.

The Boxers improved to 6-0-1 on the year with the win at Hood View Park, while the NAIA Thunderbirds dropped to 0-2 in 2016. Pacific will play again later this afternoon against Northwest Christian.

The Boxers had to rally in this one from a 4-1 deficit. UBC scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning, taking advantage of two walks, a Boxer error and a passed ball--combined with two Thunderbird singles. Pacific had put a run on the board in the top half of the inning on a solo home run by Emily Tesdale.

But Pacific rallied in their half of the fifth inning after a Rachel Roberts single, a Kaitlynn Donaca walk and a three-run blast by Ashley Mitchell, tying the contest at 4-4.

While both teams threatened in the next few innings, no one scored and the game went to extras and the international tie-breaker. Pacific took advantage first of the extra base runner. With Kylee Yamamoto on second and Megan Winans on first after an infield single, Nalani Antonio's sac bunt moved both runners up a base, and they both moved up again after the UBC pitcher was called for an illegal pitch (Yamamoto scored).

Winans would score next on a wild pitch, and Pacific would take a 6-4 lead into the bottom half of the inning. But it didn't end without drama, as the Thunderbirds would pick up a run via a Boxer error and had runners on second and third before Pacific pitcher Marissa Reichard fanned a UBC hitter to end the game.

The Boxers had ten hits in the game, two each by Roberts, Donaca and Mitchell. Reichard improved to 4-0 on the season, giving up only four hits in the eight innings pitched and just one earned run. She fanned five batters but also walked five.

Pacific is schedule to play Northwest Christian at 2:30 p.m.
