Boxers hold off upset minded Pios, 68-63

PORTLAND, Ore. — Karli McHone hit a go-ahead three-pointer with just under two minutes left and then hit insurance free throws in the final minute to help her Pacific Boxers top upset-minded Lewis & Clark, 68-63 in women's basketball action on Saturday at the Pamplin Sports Center.

It was the season finale for both teams. Pacific ends the 2015-16 campaign under first-year coach Jennifer Mountain at 11-14 overall and 6-10 in the Northwest Conference. The Pioneers finish 3-22 overall and 2-14 in league action.

McHone finished with 21 points for the winners, as did fellow junior Sarah Curl. Senior Kyla Siri had 17 points in her final collegiate contest.

This was a tight contest the entire afternoon.

The Pioneers led 17-16 after one quarter, thanks to a three-pointer at the buzzer by Natalie Kelly. Kelly drained another with eight seconds left before the half to give the home team a 34-29 lead at the halftime break.

But the Boxers would go on a 7-0 run to start the second half to take a 36-34 lead. They would outscore the Pioneers 20-7 in the quarter to lead 49-41 heading into the final ten minutes of play. Prior to that outburst, there had been seven lead changes and three ties in the game.

Pacific continued to lead in the fourth quarter but the Pioneers didn't go down easy. Sara Hogman's lay-up with 2:45 left pulled the home team to within one point and then her free throws with 2:07 remaining gave L&C their first lead since early in the third quarter at 60-59.

But McHone quickly answered with a trey 11 seconds later (62-60) and Pacific wouldn't trail again. McHone would hit four free throws in the final minute and Siri would add two more to help account for the final margin.

Pacific had just 10 turnovers on the night, which helped on an evening where the Pioneers drained 9-of-15 three-point attempts. Kelly led four Lewis & Clark players in double figures with 15 points.
