FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Pacific's
Marissa Reichard and Concordia's Jessica Lambourn took turns throwing blanks at their respective opponents, leading to a softball doubleheader split on Tuesday evening at Sherman/Larkins Stadium.
Pacific won the opener of the non-conference twinbill 7-1, while the Cavaliers won the nightcap, 3-0. The Boxers are now 8-3-1 on the season while Concordia leaves town at 10-7.
In the opener, Reichard didn't give up an earned run, scattering five hits and fanning two. She didn't walk a batter. She gave up three of those hits in the fourth inning, where a Boxer error led to an unearned run, and her defense twice cut runners down at the plate to keep the Cavs off the scoreboard. The senior left-hander improved to 5-1 on the season.
Offensively, Pacific broke open the game with four runs in the fifth inning, speared in part by
Emily Tesdale's two-run double. Earlier,
Ashley Mitchell drove in two runs with a single in the fourth inning. Tesdale,
Kaitlynn Donaca and
Rachel Roberts had two hits each and the Boxers had ten total in the first game.
In the second game, the Cavaliers broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the sixth inning to gain the split. Prior to the sixth, Boxer pitchers had spaced out seven hits but hadn't allowed a Concordia runner to cross the plate.
But the wheels came off in the sixth, jumped started by Kelsie Merritt's two-out, full count RBI single. Two more hits and two more runs followed for the Cavaliers, and combined with the pitcher's circle work by Lambourn was enough for the win. The freshman only gave up three hits in the contest, didn't walk a batter and struck out one.
McKenzie Smith was 4-for-4 in the second game for Concordia and was 6-for-7 on the day. No Boxer had more than one hit in game two. Four different Pacific pitchers entered the fray, with
Alyssa Burns taking the loss.
Pacific will return to Sherman/Larkins Stadium this weekend, opening Northwest Conference play with a four-game series against Pacific Lutheran. Start time for the Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders is noon.
