CLACKAMAS, Ore. — Pacific rode the right arm of
Paul Wolfram and the left arm of
Sam Lawrence, along with some timely hitting to sweep league favorite Pacific Lutheran on Saturday afternoon in Northwest Conference baseball action, 7-3 and 4-2.
After the days action, both teams are 6-7 overall and 2-3 in the NWC. The games were played at Clackamas High School because of wet field conditions at Chuck Bafaro Stadium in Forest Grove.
The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday night at Ron Tonkin Field in Hillsboro. Start time is 6 p.m.
The Boxers jumped on the Lutes early in game one, scoring four runs in the first inning. A two-run double by
Dylan Wright and a two-RBI single by
Joey Galeno got Pacific on the board first and as it would turn out, provide all the runs that Wolfram would need in the game.
The right-hander improved to 2-1 on the season with seven innings of shutout work, allowing only six hits and fanning seven. With a 7-0 lead, he left the game then and PLU scored all three of their runs in the eighth inning.
Galeno had two hits and three RBI in the game, while
Walker Olis added two hits, a stolen base and two runs batted in.
In the second game, the Boxers had to come back from a 2-1 deficit and did so by tying the game in the sixth after
Kane Ulrich drove in a run with a base hit.
Kurtis Kloke then put his team ahead with a blast over the center field fence in the seventh, and
Shane Suyama added an insurance run with a run scoring hit in the eighth.
Meanwhile, left-hander
Sam Lawrence went the distance on the mound to improve to 1-1. He went nine innings, gave up just four hits, two runs and struck out three.
Suyama was the only Boxer with two hits, but eight total Pacific players had base knocks, including
Ben Roquet, who had an RBI single in the third inning.
Sunday's night game will wrap up the season series between the Boxers and Lutes.
