HILLSBORO, Ore. — Pacific picked up one win and is halfway home to another in baseball action played on Saturday night against Lewis & Clark at Ron Tonkin Field.
The Boxers won the first game of the doubleheader 10-1 and were leading the nightcap 9-0 when rain halted the contest. That game will be resumed with two outs in the top of the sixth inning on Sunday (weather permitting) at 6 p.m., again at Ron Tonkin Field. The third game of the series will be played immediately following completion of the second game.
Counting the 10-1 win, the Boxers are now 9-9 on the season and 5-5 in the Northwest Conference. The Pioneers are 8-10 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
In the first game, Pacific's
Paul Wolfram and Lewis & Clark's Nathan Klein hooked up in a nifty pitcher's dual. The Boxers scored first in the opening stanza on a pair of two-out singles when
Kurtis Kloke drove home
Walker Olis. That run would be the only digit on the scoreboard until the sixth inning when
Shane Suyama knocked in
Dylan Wright with a base hit. Wright had started the rally with two outs and was moved to second on a base knock by
Joey Galeno.
That 2-0 margin carried into the eighth inning, when things finally came unhinged for the Pioneers and Klein. Four different L&C pitchers gave out six free passes and an error also helped prolong the inning. Three Boxer hits added to the scoring as Pacific pushed eight runners across the plate. Wright and
Kane Ulrich had RBI singles in the frame.
Meanwhile Wolfram scattered 10 hits and didn't give up an earned run. He fanned four Pioneer batters and worked out of jams in six different innings where the Pioneers had at least one runner in scoring position. He improved to 3-2 on the season with the win. For the freshman Klein, it was his first loss of the year (3-1).
Kloke and Wright had two hits each, while Suyama went 3-for-5.
In the second game,
Sam Lawrence has given up only one hit through 5.2 innings of work. The Boxers scored five runs in the third inning, with the big blow a three-run shot over the leftfield fence off the bat of Kloke.
If either of the Sunday games are not able to be completed, the next opportunity will be on Tuesday at Ron Tonkin Field.
