Boxers break out big bats again

CLAREMONT, Calif. — For the second day in a row, the Pacific baseball team scored football-like numbers in rolling to a road victory over Pomona-Pitzer at Alumni Field, 25-7.

The Boxers have now won nine games in a row and sit at 16-9 on the season. The Sagehens, who had won five of their last six games before the Boxers arrived, dropped to 12-9 on the year.

Pacific, who won 19-11 on Friday in the first game of the series, left little doubt about the outcome of this game from the opening moments on. The Boxers scored 10 runs in the first inning, before the Sagehens could even pick up a bat. They sent 17 batters to the plate, who collected eight hits including Shane Suyama's three-run double, Ben Duerr's two-RBI double and Walker Olis' two-run homer.

The Boxers would add four more runs in the fourth inning, five in the sixth and tack on five more in the ninth. They pounded out 24 hits by 13 different players.

Just to show that everything they touch right now turns to gold, they turned a triple play in the second inning. After two singles jump started the inning for the Sagehens, third baseman Suyama speared a line drive and then fired to Ben Roquet at second base to double up a runner, who then delivered to first baseman Joey Galeno to complete the triple killing.

The offensive numbers on the day are staggering. Duerr was 3-for-3 with four runs scored, a home run and three RBI. Roquet was 3-for-5, with two doubles, three runs scored and three RBI. Kurtis Kloke had three hits, two of them doubles, and drove in four runs.

Olis had two hits and four RBI. Others with two hits each included Eli Wisdom (who subbed for Duerr in center field), Suyama (who also had four RBI), Mike Thomson and Nathan Suyematsu. Five players came off the bench and recorded hits for head coach Brian Billings and squad.

Boxer starting pitcher Sam Lawrence was the good fortune recipient of all that run support. He went the required five innings to record the win, giving up nine hits and three earned runs. He improved his record to 4-1 on the season.

The two teams will put a wrap on the series on Saturday with a single game. Start time is 11 a.m.
