Boxers get win, Kloke sets record

HILLSBORO, Ore. — Pacific pitcher Nate Montgomery tossed seven shutout innings and his teammates Kurtis Kloke and Walker Olis wrote their names into the Boxer record books as Pacific took down Lewis & Clark in baseball action on Wednesday night at Ron Tonkin Field, 8-0.

The contest was a non-conference game between two Northwest Conference opponents. The Boxers improved to 21-13 on the season, while the Pioneers fell to 11-26. The game was shortened to eight innings because of rain.

Montgomery improved to 2-0 with the mid-week victory. The senior righthander gave up only five hits in seven stanzas of work, walked one and struck out three. It was his eighth appearance of the season, but his first start.

Pacific didn't waste any time climbing into the drivers seat and setting a school record at the same time. In the bottom of the first, left fielder Kloke looped a single into center field to score Ben Roquet, giving Kloke his 50th RBI of the season, a new Boxer single-season mark. That mark had sat in the record book for 15 years, set in 2001 by Matt Lengwenus.

The Boxers would add another run a few pitches later when Olis scored on a passed ball to give Pacific an early 2-0 lead. Pacific would add another plate crossing in the third on Josh Keithly's sacrifice fly, and in fourth on an unearned run.

Two more Pacific runners crossed the plate in the sixth when Charlie Dietrich got things started with a double. Olis brought him home with a single and Roquet (who had walked) scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0. Four walks in the eighth inning helped to bring in two more runs to account for the 8-0 final.

Olis, who already owns the Pacific single-season stolen base record (25-25), also tied the Boxer record for most walks in a season (35) with his free pass in the eighth inning. The senior outfielder went 2-for-4 on the day and scored twice. With his 47 runs scored, he is two runs away from tying that record as well.

Roquet scored four of Pacific's runs, went 2-for-3 and stole two bases. Dietrich went 2-for-4 with a double.

The Boxers will wrap up the regular season this coming weekend with a three-game series at home against Whitman College. Start time for Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single contest are both noon. On Sunday, Pacific will honor its nine seniors prior to the start of the game.

Pacific currently sits tied for fourth place in the NWC at 12-9. The top four teams at the end of the regular season on Sunday qualify for the conference tournament.
