FOREST GROVE, Ore. — On a bright day filled with sunshine at Chuck Bafaro Stadium, the Pacific baseball teams' mood turned dark after a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Willamette, 8-6, and 12-4, on Saturday afternoon.
The twin losses brought to a halt the Boxers' 10-game win streak. Playing at Bafaro Stadium for the first time this season, the Boxers fell to 17-11 on the year and to 10-7 in Northwest Conference play (tied for second place). The Bearcats improved to 16-14 overall and to 10-10 in NWC action.
In the opener, Willamette's Brandon Nelson and PU's
Paul Wolfram were on a sharp pitching track early, with the Bearcats holding a 3-2 lead through seven innings. In the eighth inning, with Wolfram gone, Willamette struck for two runs on a homer by Jack Brett. The visitors added three more runs in the ninth inning, thanks in part to three walks, a hit batter and a balk.
Trailing 8-2, the Boxers made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth with a four-run outburst.
Walker Olis singled in a run and
Kurtis Kloke drove in two, but the game ended with two Boxers on base and a strikeout.
Brett and Perry Van Eckhardt had home runs in the game for the Bearcats. Nelson got the win on the mound with seven solid innings of work, allowing only two earned runs. Pacific's Kloke hit his eighth roundtripper of the year, and also had a double and three RBI.
Ben Duerr was 3-for-3 and Olis had two hits.
Wolfram was the hard-luck loser, allowing only one earned run in 5.2 innings of work to fall to 5-3 on the season.
In the second game, a six-run Willamette fifth inning spelled doom for the Boxers. In that inning, the Bearcats had six hits, including a two-run double by Mason Fessler, chasing Boxer starter
Sam Lawrence. Willamette's Ty Wyatt also stole home in the inning and had a two-run double during a three-run first inning.
The Bearcats had 18 hits in the contest, including five (5-for-5) by Connor Bailey. Pacific had 11 hits, but only
Nathan Suyematsu had two.
The Boxers and Bearcats will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday in Forest Grove. Start time for the single game is noon.
