Boxers win rematch between NWC front runners, 15-10

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — The threat of lightning delayed the start of the Pacific-George Fox lacrosse match by an hour and five minutes. When the action finally began, the Boxers had its own version of thunder and lightning in Paisley Hiefield and Jordyn Godfrey.

Hiefield scored four first-half goals and Godfrey had five in the second half to help lead Pacific to a key 15-10 Northwest Conference victory over the Bruins under the lights at Hanson Stadium. The win for the Boxers mean they split the season series with their Newberg rivals and are now tied for first place in the conference with one game left to play.

Both squads are 6-1 in NWC action. Pacific is 9-4 overall, George Fox is 8-5 on the year. The Boxers wrap up the regular season on Sunday at Whitman, while the Bruins host Puget Sound.

"We really came to play tonight against a very good team," said Pacific head coach Wynne Lobel. "We took control of the match early and kept our foot on the pedal. It was one of our best efforts of the season."

With a lightning clap just before the scheduled start time of 6 pm, and then another at 6:18, each parlayed into a mandatory NCAA delay of 30 minutes. When the action began, it was intense and aggressive, worthy of a rematch between two evenly matched teams. The first time these two clubs met in March, the Bruins scored in the final 30 seconds of play to win, 13-12.

The clubs split goals in the first ten minutes of play, making the count 2-2. But the Boxers scored three goals in the next seven minutes, two of them by Hiefield. The Bruins would mix in a goal with ten minutes to go in the half, but Pacific would score three more times before intermission, including two more by Hiefield---one with just five seconds left, making the halftime count 8-3.

Hiefield added another counter 20 seconds into the second half, and the Boxers would play as front runners the rest of the match. Godfrey had two of Pacific's early second-half scores as the home team kept at least a five-goal cushion after the break.

Hiefield finished with six goals and an assist on the night, while Godfrey had five scores and two assists. Jasmyne Adame also scored twice for the home team. On the defensive side, Nicki Leeming had six caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Miranda Edwords led the Bruins with three goals.

The match was the final home game for three Pacific seniors — Mahea Wong, Kara Smouse and Nicki Leeming.
