Boxers fall to Bruins to end season

SPOKANE, Wash. — George Fox pitcher Madison Sorenson went the distance, holding Pacific to one run, four hits and ending their 2016 season with a 4-1 verdict on Friday afternoon in the consolation bracket at the Northwest Conference Softball Championships at Diana Marks Field.

The No. 4 seed Boxers wrap up the year with a 25-16-1 record, while the Bruins stay alive in the double elimination tournament and improved to 29-13.

After dropping the morning game to No. 1 seed Whitworth (4-2), the Boxers got on the board first in the afternoon game. Rachel Roberts was hit by a pitch to lead off the contest, moved to second on Kaitlynn Donaca's bunt, stole third and then came home with the catcher's throw sailed into left field.

But that would be all the scoring the Boxers would muster in the contest against Sorenson. She would scatter four hits in the game, allow zero earned runs, walked one and fanned three to improve to 14-4 on the year.

The Boxers stranded a runner at third base in the sixth inning after Ashley Mitchell singled and worked her way to three of the bases, but had no other great scoring opportunities.

George Fox meanwhile got to weary Boxer pitcher Marissa Reichard in the third inning to score what would turn out to be the winning runs. Reichard, who also pitched the first game, had held the Bruins hitless until the third before things came unraveled. Four GFU hits, including RBI-singles from Annie Veatch and Ashley Bunce chased in two runs to give the Bruins their first lead.

They would plate a run in the fifth on Kat Hylton's RBI single and added insurance in the sixth on Kayla Anderson's home run.

A lead-off walk to Cindy Chan gave the Boxer hope in the top of the seventh, but a line-out double play and a strikeout ended the game.

Trisha Snydar had two of Pacific's four hits against Sorenson. Reichard put in a valiant effort in pitching both games, but took the loss to end her season at 17-8.

The Boxers and Bruins split four games in Forest Grove in April.  GFU advances to play another loser's out game on Saturday morning at 9.
