Boxers win slugfest, 17-9

SPOKANE, Wash. — Walker Olis hit two home runs and a double to lead a 18-hit Pacific attack as the Boxers stayed alive in the Northwest Conference baseball tournament with a 17-9 win over George Fox on Saturday morning at Paul Merkel Field.

The outcome eliminated the Bruins and kept Pacific's hopes alive. The Boxers are now scheduled to play at 4 pm, against the loser of the game currently playing, Whitworth and Pacific Lutheran. That contest will be a loser's out game, with the winner advancing to Sunday's final.

George Fox ends its season at 21-17, while the Boxers improved to 24-15.

Pacific had to battle back from an early deficit, trailing 5-1 after three innings. But at the time, little did anyone know that six total runs was scant compared to what was to come.

The Boxers began their own run brigade in the top of the fourth with three runs, topped by a two-run double by Kane Ulrich. PU would tie the contest in the fifth on the first of Olis' two home runs, this one a solo shot that made it 6-6.

After the Bruins returned to the lead with a homer by Kaydn Naninni in the bottom of the fifth, the slugging Boxers lit up the scoreboard again in the sixth, all with two outs. Joey Galeno drove in two runs with a single, as did Justin Strayer to put the Boxers up 11-7.

Pacific would never trail again. They put up three more runs in the seventh and pushed a trio of runners across home plate in the ninth as well. Olis hit his two-run shot in the ninth, his 11th of the season.

Ironically, the Bruins had 19 hits of their own in the wild contest, but only four of them were for extra bases--while Pacific had seven doubles in the game and Olis' two round trippers. GFU also had three errors while the Boxers played flawless defense.

Ben Roquet and Dylan Wright joined Olis with the three-hit club, while Eli Wisdom and Strayer had two base knocks each. Strayer, a senior making only his seventh start of the year, drove in four runs in the offensive showcase.

Kyler Knieriem picked up the win on the hill for Pacific in relief, going 4.1 innings and allowing three earned runs. He improved to 5-1 on the season.
