SALEM, Ore. — The Pacific University and Willamette University baseball teams took turns beating each other up during a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday at John Lewis Field.
The Bearcats claimed the opener, 11-0, while the Boxers grabbed the nightcap, 8-1. Pacific is now 25-17 on the season, while Willamette moved to 19-19. The two clubs will wrap up the three-game series and the 2016 season tomorrow (Sunday) with a single game in Salem at 1 p.m.
Willamette won the noon game by pounding out 15 hits and using a superb pitching performance by Matt Steindorff. Gordie Clary had four hits and Troy Conway had three, including a home run and four RBI as the Bearcats scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and then busted the game open with five runs in the seventh.
Steindorf stymied the Boxer bats, allowing only three hits through eight innings of work. He fanned eight Pacific batters to improve to 6-2 on the season.
It was the first time all season that Pacific has been shutout. The Boxers had only five hits in the game, and no player had more than one.
But the Boxer offense came alive in the second game in the 8-1 win.
Kurtis Kloke hit a three-run homer, his 11th of the season, as one of his three hits. He also drove in four runs.
Ryan Sohn,
Taren Bradd and
Mike Thomson all had two hits apiece--with Bradd driving in a pair of runs with a double during Pacific's four-run fifth inning.
The visitors received excellent pitching from
Sam Lawrence and
Kyler Knieriem. Lawrence pitched the first five innings, allowing only two hits. He didn't give up a run and he struck out five Bearcats to improve to 6-2 on the season. Knieriem threw the final four stanzas, fanning five batters and earning a save. He gave up only four hits and one run.
Pacific needs a win in the season and series finale, as the Bearcats lead the 2016 series between the two teams, three games to two.
