Galeno's walk-off wins it for Boxers

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Pinch hitter Joey Galeno drilled a shot down the right field line to bring home two runs and cap a wild baseball comeback win for Pacific over Linfield on Wednesday night at Chuck Bafaro Stadium, 5-4.

Galeno's walk-off winner means that the Boxers are now 19-11 on the season, while Linfield drops to 17-14. The two clubs had already finished their three-game Northwest Conference set last month in McMinnville, so this contest was a non-league game. The Boxers won all three contests in that series, finishing 4-0 against the Wildcats this season.

Galeno's line drive into the corner (officially ruled a single) was the third hit of the inning for the home team, who also scored three times to overcome a 4-2 deficit. Prior to the ninth, Pacific had just five hits on the day against eight different Wildcat pitchers (one per inning).

In that fateful final stanza, Josh Keithly hit a one-out single to get things started against reliever Cody Walker. Catcher Kane Ulrich singled as well. Ben Duerr followed with a hard shot to the right side of the infield that was fielded cleanly, but then thrown into left field, allowing pinch runner Dante Filippini to score and Ulrich to move to third (and Duerr to second).

That brought up Galeno, normally Pacific's starting first baseman. His rope hugged the right field line, allowing Ulrich and Duerr to score easily, and sending his teammates flying out of the dugout to tackle him somewhere near second base.

Prior to the ending, Linfield had the game in hand for much of the night. They scored three runs in the top of the third to take a 4-1 lead, keyed by Ryan Ross' two-run single. That appeared to be enough as the committee of Wildcat pitchers kept the Boxers off the bases and the scoreboard.

Meanwhile, PU reliever Nate Montgomery was outstanding out of the bullpen, pitching 5.1 innings of shutout ball, allowing only one hit and no walks while fanning four.

Kurtis Kloke had two hits, including a double to lead the Boxers on offense. In the first inning, he drove in his 44th run of the season. Ulrich also had two hits. Scott Hilpert had two of Linfield's six hits to lead the visitors.

Second place Pacific now heads to Spokane for the weekend, taking on NWC-leading Whitworth in a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon.
