Boxers Sweep Pair at Pacific University Classic

The Pacific volleyball team swept a pair of matches against Simpson and Walla University in the Pacific University Classic on Sunday in Forest Grove.

The Boxers (6-4) extended its winning streak to three with back-to-back wins in three. Five of the six Boxers' wins in 2016 have come in straight sets.
 
In the two victories, Pacific outhit its opponents by a .274 to .039 margin to go along with 13 service aces and an average of 11.50 assists per set. Senior Tiare Kaopua (Nanakuli, Hawaii) led the attack with 5.25 kills per set and a blistering .432 hitting percentage. Plus, setter Jamie Steach (Pasco, Wash.) averaged 11.50 assists and libero Lia Zablan (Ewa Beach, Hawaii) averaged three digs per set.
 
Pacific started the day with a 25-16, 25-18, 25-19 win over Simpson. The Boxers hit at a .292 clip - just shy of a season-high (.308) – with 43 kills in the win. Kaopua had 16 kills for her seventh double-digit kill effort on the season to lead Pacific, plus Steach set the attack with 38 assists to go along with a team-high eight digs, nearly a double double. Junior Morgan Mendicino (San Diego, Calif.) added eight kills, three service aces and a pair of block assists for the Boxers.

The Boxers closed out the day with a 25-11, 25-11, 25-22 win over Walla Walla. Pacific utilized a balanced attack with six-different players recording a kill including Mendicino, who had a team-high eight kills. Plus, freshman Milana Ivkovic (Beaverton, Ore.) posted a season-high five service aces, Sophomore Ellie Parker (Beaverton, Ore.) had 17 assists and Zablan had 10 digs for Pacific. As a team, the Boxers posted a .255 hitting percentage compared to .050 by the Wolves in the win.
 
Next up for Pacific is the start of the rigorous play in the Northwest Conference. The Boxers begin play with a trip to Whitman and Whitworth on Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. and Sept. 17 at 5 p.m., respectively.
