Boxers fall in four to Whitworth

The Pacific University volleyball team dropped a 25-21, 17-25, 25-12, 26-24 decision to Whitworth on Saturday.

The Boxers (6-6, 0-2) were led by a match-high 15-kill performance by Tiare Kaopua (Nankuli, Hawaii) and teammate Karlee Duncan (Bend, Oregon) added 10 kills in the loss.

Whitworth (7-3, 2-0) spread the attack around with a .171 hitting percentage in the win to go along with 11 service aces. Erin White had five service aces and Emiko Kahler led the attack with 12 kills and a .385 hitting percentage.

Pacific built an early 16-10 lead in the opening set before Whitworth closed out the set on an 11-1 run to take the opening set. The Boxers led from start to finish in the second set with Kaopua recording four kills in the set. The Pirates raced out to an early 10-3 lead in the third set en route to the 25-12 victory. In the deciding fourth set, like the first two sets, the visitors held a lead for most of the set as much as six on a pair of occasions. A resilient Whitworth squad rallied to eventually take a 21-20 lead, later in the set. The Boxers withstood one match point before the Pirates capitalized on a Boxer service error and recorded a service ace to secure the set and the match.

The Boxers will next return to the Stoller Center, where they have a perfect 3-0 mark, when they host Puget Sound on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.
