A goal in the 54
th minute by Julian Hanlon-Austin of host Willamette was just enough for a 1-0 win over the Pacific University men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon in Salem, Oregon.
The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Boxers, who fall to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the Northwest Conference.
The Bearcats, who outshot Pacific by a 12-11 margin, improves to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Northwest Conference.
In the tightly-contested and physical match, Pacific put pressure on the Willamette defense for most of the opening 45 minutes. A shot by
Keola Norton (Kahalu'u, Hawai'i) in the second minute was blocked and two corner kick attempts came up short for the visitors from Forest Grove.
Shortly after taking their first corner kick of the match, the Bearcats ended the scoreless tie when Hanlon-Austin found the back of the net for a goal. The Boxers continued to put pressure on their opponents as they mounted a pair of equalizer attempts. In the 66
th minute, a header by
Kanoa Terrazas (El Cajon, Calif.), following a corner kick sailed left and they failed to convert a penalty kick in the 73
rd minute. A last-second attempt on a corner kick by Pacific ended the contest for the Boxers.
Next, Pacific will host Linfield on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2:30 p.m. at Hanson Stadium.
