The Pacific University women's basketball team dropped a 74-67 decision to No. 24 George Fox on Saturday afternoon.
The Boxers (5-14, 3-7 NWC) were led by senior All-American candidate
Sarah Curl (Portland, Ore.), who had her second-straight double double, with 29 points and 12 rebounds in the loss. Freshman
Merrily Jones (Milwaukie, Ore.) and senior
Karli McHone (Glenns Ferry, Idaho) added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Bruins (15-4, 7-3 NWC) snapped a two-game losing streak as Kimberly Frost led the Bruins with 20 points. Kaitlin Jamieson and Kaycee Creech added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Down six after the first quarter, Pacific started the second quarter on an 8-2 run that included a pair of 3-pointers by McHone that tied the game at 25 and for the second time in the contest. After the teams traded baskets on a pair of occasions, Curl put the Boxers ahead by one, 28-27, when she made one of two free throws with 6:55 left in the opening half. The lead went back and forth for the remainder of the half.
Later in the half, Pacific freshman
Jenee Brown (Kailua, Hawaii) sank a pair of free throws to tie the game at 32. The Bruins came back with a 9-2 run to take a 41-34 lead into the halftime break.
Twice in the third quarter, the Boxers managed to cut the deficit to four. In the quarter, Brown and Curl gave a spark to the Boxers, scoring 14 of the 18 points. Plus, the Boxers forced four George Fox turnovers and held the nationally-ranked Bruins to 38.5% (5-for-13) shooting as they headed into the final quarter down three, 55-52.
Jones hit a jumper to start the fourth quarter for Pacific to cut the deficit to one, 55-54. After the Bruins extended the lead to three, 57-54, Curl scored the next five points to put Pacific back in front, 59-57 with 8:07 to play. Again, the Bruins regained the lead when Tavin Headings made a 3-pointer that put the visitors ahead for the remainder of the contest. The Boxers managed to get within one on three occasions in the final minutes, but George Fox managed to have an answer to the Pacific threat. The Bruins sealed the win, making five of its last six free throws.
Next, Pacfiic will continue its homestand as they host nationally-ranked Whitman on Friday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. at the Stoller Center.
