SPOKANE, Wash. —
Sarah Curl scored 28 points for the third-time this season, but Pacific was unable to overcome host Whitworth as the Pirates topped the Boxers 67-60 at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
Whitworth led wire-to-wire shooting out to a nine-point lead in the opening five minutes before Curl (Portland, Ore.) pulled the Boxers within six. With 3:24 left in the period, Whitworth regained the nine-point advantage. The final basket of the quarter came at 1:25 as
Karli McHone (Glenns Ferry, Idaho) drained a 3-pointer to send the two sides to the quarter break with the hosts up 16-10.
Pacific battled to within four points of the Pirates in the second period, as
Erica Pagan (Kailua, Hawaii) converted a layup with 1:08 on the clock. Whitworth wrapped up the half with five-straight points to take a nine-point lead into halftime.
The third quarter saw Whitworth's lead reach double-figures, with the Pirates advantage reaching 15 points at the 4:11 mark after a Grace Douglas 3-pointer.
Jillian Ross (St. Helens, Ore.) closed out the third period for Pacific with a buzzer-beater 3-pointer to pull within eight at 50-42.
The final five minutes of the fourth quarter saw Pacific battle from down 11 to within two points during a 9-0 Boxers' run over a three minute period. Pacific's 9-0 swing started on a 3-pointer by Ross and continued with six-straight points from Curl. Whitworth stopped the bleeding with a jumper by Faith Cebula at 1:38, before tallying a pair of free throws to push the lead to six with 37 seconds remaining. Despite four points from the Boxers in the final 30 seconds, the Pirates strong free throw shooting wrapped-up a 67-60 victory for Whitworth.
Curl led all scorers with 28 points, while Ross finished the night with nine points - all from beyond the 3-point arc.
Merrily Jones (Milwaukie, Ore.) and Curl both snagged five rebounds and McHone led the Boxers with three assists.
Pacific wraps-up the eastern Washington swing tomorrow afternoon with a 4 p.m. scheduled tip-off in Walla Walla, Wash. against No. 15/16 Whitman.
