HILLSBORO, Ore. — Kurtis Kloke left the yard, while
Paul Wolfram picked up a victory in game one of a NWC doubleheader against the visiting Whitman Blues at Ron Tonkin Field.
Playing at the home of the Hillsboro Hops, the Boxers topped Whitman 3-2 in game one and fell 14-4 in the second game.
The Boxers and Blues meet again on Sunday with game one set as a NWC meeting and game two scheduled as a non-conference game. Game one is scheduled to begin at noon and will be played at Ron Tonkin Field.
Game One: Pacific 3, Whitman 2
Wolfram (Las Vegas, Nev.) struck out six Blues in 5.2 innings of work, while Kloke (San Bernardino, Calif.) recorded a pair of hits in the Boxers' game one victory.
Kloke got the scoring started for Pacific on the third pitch of the second inning as he launched a solo home run over the left field wall to give Pacific a 1-0 lead.
Whitman answered with a run in the third before Pacific's
Dylan Wright (Gilbert, Ariz.) drew a one-out wak in the fourth. A groundout allowed Wright to reach third, where he would score easily on a triple to right center by
Joey Galeno (Auburn, Wash.).
Pacific added a third run in the fifth inning when
Brandon Henderson (Pearl City, Hawaii) walked to lead off the frame. Henderson reached second on a groundout and scampered to third on an infield single by
Eli Wisdom (La Grande, Ore.). On a 1-2 pitch,
Charlie Dietrich (Aberdeen, Wash.) plated Henderson on an infield single to give the Boxers a 3-1 lead.
Whitman added a second and final run in the sixth, before Pacific shut down the Blues over the final three innings.
Kloke notched two hits, while Galeno, Kloke and Dietrich all finished with a RBI each. On the mound, Wolfram picked up the win with six strikeouts, while
Cody Ahlgrimm (Colorado Springs, Colo.) tossed 1.2 innings of one-hit ball and
Spencer Backstrom (Bellingham, Wash.) closed out the game with five strikeouts on his way to his third save.
Game Two: Whitman 14, Pacific 4
Dietrich recorded two hits in game two as Whitman topped Pacific 14-4.
Whitman scored two runs in the second and six in the third, taking an 8-0 lead into the top of the fifth inning. The fifth inning of action saw Whitman add five runs, extending the lead to 13-0.
Pacific opened the bottom of the fifth with a first pitch Henderson single. Henderson was lifted and replaced by pinch runner
Dante Filippini (Three Forks, Mont.), who advanced to second on a single from
Josh Keithly (Mission Viejo, Calif.). A one-out double to left center by Wisdom scored Filippini, while a groundout by Dietrich scored Keithly for the Boxers' second run.
The Blues added a 14th run in the eighth, while Pacific picked up two in the bottom of the inning. With one out and
Jacob Vice (Hillsboro, Ore.) on second after a balk,
Dustin Meyer (Silverton, Ore.) reached on a dropped third strike. A second balk in the inning moved Vice to third and Meyer to second. A throwing error from the Blues allowed Vice and Meyer to score the final two runs of the game.
Five Pacific pitchers combined for eight strikeouts in the loss.
